1799 S-189 R2 PCGS graded Poor-1 (EAC Basal State-
1)
. Glossy bluish steel and medium chocolate brown. The sur-
faces are smooth and void of marks, just heavily worn. Choice
for the grade. The upper half of the date is clear but the lower
half is worn away, and maybe a third of LIBERTY can be made
out. Most of the reverse is worn smooth.
Our grade is Fair-2
for the obverse but barely BS-1 for the reverse, so our
grade is consistent with the slab grade.

. Mostly glossy dark steel and chocolate brown. The hair
details suggest a slightly higher grade, but there is a small
patch of very fine roughness at IB in IBERTY and the remainder
of the planchet shows extremely faint roughness under strong
magnification. The eye appeal, however, is quite nice for the
grade. No other defects. MDS, Breen state II, with die clash-
marks at the neck. The 8 over 7 in the date is clear while the
rest of the overdate is faint.

. A point or two sharper but there are traces of
microscopic roughness on otherwise smooth surfaces. The
roughness is most noticeable at OF AMER where there are
microscopic traces of greenish verdigris, but it is not dis-
tracting. Both sides show some light contact marks, all con-
sistent with the grade. The notable ones are a light rim
bruise at the N in UNITED and a dull diagonal nick over the
N in ONE. Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown and steel
mixed with some lighter chocolate brown on the obverse.
The date and legends are complete and clear and the
repunching on the base of the F in OF is obvious. In addi-
tion the upper edge of the ends of the wreath stems slants
down, which is diagnostic for this rare variety. Not perfect
but very close to net G6. Graded VG7 net G5 by Noyes and
Bland, Noyes photo #28576. Tied for CC#6 honors and
only a single example is known that grades better than VG7
among the 15 examples known.

. Sharpness F12 but the surfaces are uneven under glossy
steel brown and tan toning blending to darker reddish chocolate
in protected areas. This cent was cleaned and retoned and both
sides are covered with a thin coat of wax or some similar sub-
stance. No verdigris. A dull nick in the field off the chin is the
only notable mark. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack arc-
ing through UN and the fraction bar. The date and legends are
complete and the overdate is obvious.

VF20
. Sharpness VF35 but there are at least a half dozen light
rim bruises on both sides, none significant but far too many to
ignore. Otherwise this cent is smooth and quite attractive.
Glossy medium chocolate brown. E-MDS, Breen state III, with
die clashmarks on both sides and a die crack through CA and
the fraction bar, but no cud breaks.

. Glossy medium chocolate brown delicately
mottled with slightly darker olive brown. No roughness or
verdigris, only minor contact marks. The notable ones are a
thin diagonal nick on TE in STATES and another inside the
top of the wreath. LDS, Breen state VIII. An irregular cud
break extends from the second A in AMERICA to slightly
beyond the fraction and reaches up to the second 0 in the
denominator. Another cud break reaches inside the dentils
over the C in AMERICA. This is the plate coin for state VIII
in the Breen encyclopedia. The upper part of the reverse is
softly struck while the lower half is bold. The date and leg-
ends are complete and clear, and the overdate feature is
obvious to the unaided eye.

. Glossy medium chocolate brown and olive. There is no sig-
nificant roughness, only small nicks consistent with the grade,
none notable. The date is clear and the legends are easily read-
able. The overdate is obvious. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a dull
die crack through the base of RTY.
