1803 S-245 R3 VF20
. Five points sharper but there is a fine
scratch from the top of the hair ribbon to the throat. Otherwise
only tiny contact marks of no significance. Glossy dark choco-
late brown and steel with traces of frosty lighter reddish brown
toning in some of the protected areas, especially on the right
side of the reverse. LDS, Breen state III, with a large, strong
cud break connecting RICA to the rim. The strike is uneven,
strong on the right sides and weaker on the left sides, a result
of the die faces being out of proper parallel alignment. A neat
die state, called the "Unicorn" variety because of the strong die
clashmarks along the profile of Ms Liberty.

1803 S-247 R3 F15
. A "Mumps" variety. Sharpness closer to
VF20 but there are a few small contact marks scattered over the
obverse, none distracting but too many to ignore. A short, light
horizontal scratch in the field before the throat is the best iden-
tifying mark. Glossy medium chocolate brown with slightly
lighter steel brown toning on the devices. Sharply struck MDS,
Breen state II, with strong die clashmarks arcing through the
denominator. The crumbling at the throat (the so-called
"Mumps" break) is obvious.

1803 S-248 R4 VF25
. A "Mumps" variety. Five points sharper
but there are a few light, old scratches from the face near the
eye into the hair at the left, all blended perfectly into the toning.
In addition there is a dull diagonal nick under the curl on the
neck, a small horizontal nick on the front edge of the neck, and
a small collection of pinpricks near the dentils left of the denom-
inator. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate. The eye appeal of
this cent is excellent in spite of the minor marks. Nicely struck
EDS, Breen state I. The "Mumps" break at the throat is strong,
the Doubled Fraction Bar is clear, and the reverse is uncracked.
A very nice example of this tough variety, and it comes with an
interesting provenance.

Glossy steel and medium chocolate brown. No roughness or

There is no trace of a die crack at MERI. The "Mumps" break at
the throat and Doubled Fraction Bar features are clear.
Our
