1801 S-220 R3 Error Fraction 1/000 VF20+
. Sharpness
VF30 but there is a patch of very fine reddish corrosion on the
leaves under IT in UNITED. The obverse is covered with tiny
contact marks, none significant but too many for the sharpness
grade. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with splashes
of darker chocolate brown toning on the reverse and frosty
lighter brown in protected areas. Rare TDS, Breen state VIII. In
addition to several die cracks and strong clashmarks there are
narrow rim cud breaks under the date, a stronger cud connect-
ing the tops of the A & M in AMERICA to the rim, and a tiny cud
extending inside the dentils over the A in STATES. These dies
were worn out.

1801 S-224 R1 NGC graded VF25
. Rather glossy steel and
chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and nearly void of
marks giving this cent excellent eye appeal. A small diagonal
nick on the cheek is the only mark, and it is insignificant. EDS,
Breen state I, before any die cracks or cuds.
Our grade is
F15+ choice, very close to VF20.
The attribution is shown
on the NGC label.

1801 NC-3 R6+ Error Fraction 1/000 G5
. Clipped
Planchet. Sharpness F12 or a bit better but both sides are
covered with moderate granularity. No verdigris. The only
mark is a dull scratch across the center of the neck into the
hair, and this mark is mostly hidden in the roughness and
toning. Slightly glossy chocolate brown. The date and leg-
ends are complete and clear. A small, curved planchet clip
over BE in LIBERTY just touches the top of that E and
reaches the base of the dentils under the error (1/000)
fraction. Not perfect but still comparable to the Breen plate
coin for this very rare variety. Only 15 examples are known
and the finest grades VG8.

1802 NC-1 R5+ VG7
. Description: a couple points sharper but
there are several small contact marks on the cheek plus a few
more in the field before the face. The surfaces are mostly
smooth but traces of minor roughness can be found on both
sides. No verdigris. Slightly glossy dark steel brown with lighter
steel brown highpoints. MDS showing a die crack from the right
edge of the B in LIBERTY down to the earlobe. The date and
legends are complete and clear. An acceptable example of this
rare variety.

1802 S-228 R2 Error Fraction 1/000 PCGS Genuine, AU
Details, Environmental Damage
. Attractive frosty light to
medium chocolate brown. This cent offers great "naked" eye
appeal, but a glass reveals microscopic porosity and granularity,
strongest in the field behind the portrait. No verdigris, and the
only notable marks are a small chip out of the planchet in the
field over the bust tip, a dull rim nick behind the head, and a
collection of tiny nicks on the A in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state
IV, with several die cracks on the reverse. The Error Fraction is
clear, and this feature is shown on the PCGS label.
Our grade
is EF45+ sharpness net VF20.
