1814 S-294 R1 Turban Head, Crosslet 4 VF20
. Glossy
medium chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and attractive, just
a few trivial contact marks from choice. A tiny rim bruise right of
star 12 and a diagonal nick over the T in CENT are the notable
marks. MDS with fine radial die flowlines near the dentils on
both sides. Struck slightly off center to K-4. A nice example of a
common variety.

MDS, Breen state IV, with a fine die crack arcing from the top of
the 8 through the lowest curl to star 11. A nice Turban Head
cent for the grade.

1814 S-295 R1 Turban Head, Plain 4 G4
. Double Struck
Reverse Brockage Maker. Glossy medium chocolate brown and
steel with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. No defects,
just worn. This cent was struck two times with both strikes cen-
tered on the planchet but rotated maybe 5 degrees between the
impressions. The doubling is obvious to the unaided eye on the
obverse but the reverse shows only a single strike. In addition
the reverse is bulged outward a bit which is typical of cents that
were struck against a blank planchet during a second strike (in
this case creating a reverse brockage on the second planchet).
As a result the reverse shows considerably more wear than the
obverse because it was slightly convex and had no protective
rim. A neat mint error.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

Date Set of Large Cents, 1793-1857
. Grades range from
Basal State-1 to EF40 with the earlier dates averaging AG and
the later ones VG-Fine. All have a readable date except for the
1793. The 1793 is a Lettered Edge Wreath type while the 1799
and 1804 are counterfeits (genuine large cents with altered
dates). There are two dated 1852 and none dated 1851. One of
each date is represented in two Wayte Raymond boards.
Inspection is recommended. Lot of 64 coins.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP

1816 N-2 R1 NGC graded MS64 Brown
. Attractive lustrous
light steel brown with subtle overtones of light bluish steel and
at least 10% of the mint red remaining. No stains or carbon
spots. The only marks are a dull nick on the forelock and a faint
hairline scratch in the field before the nose. M-LDS with rim cud
breaks from star 8 to star 11 and a smaller one between stars
11 & 12. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint
state cents that was discovered soon after the end of the US
Civil War.
Our grade is MS62+.
The attribution is shown on
the NGC label.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,500-UP

clashmarks and flowlines on both sides. Just a hint of friction on
the highest points from mint state. The doubled coronet line
over BERTY is clear.
