1836 N-6 R6+ (as a die state) Gobrecht Head VG7
.
Sharpness F15 or slightly better but dark and covered with
very light corrosion mixed with a few specks of verdigris on
the reverse. Slightly glossy very dark steel and olive brown.
A tiny scratch over the R in AMERICA a good identifying
mark. Perhaps a dozen known in the early die state without
the usually seen strong cud break above star 8.
Estimated Value ................................................. $300-UP

1836 N-6 R2 Gobrecht Head AU55
. Lustrous light to
medium steel brown and light chocolate with tiny peeps of
faded mint red remaining on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers
the fields and protected areas and this cent offers excellent eye
appeal. A tiny nick in the field close before the eye and a barely
visible rim bruise at the D in UNITED are the notable marks,
and they are wholly insignificant. MDS with the cud break over
star 8 but without the radial die crack from the dentils right of
the D in UNITED.
Removed from an NGC slab graded
MS62BN
(NGC label #380720-001 included, and it shows the
attribution and Rasmussen provenance).
Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP

1836 N-7 R4 Gobrecht Head PCGS graded MS63
Brown,
CAC APPROVED
. Choice lustrous steel brown
with frosty lighter steel brown toning covering the pro-
tected areas on both sides. No spots or stains, only a hint
of friction on the highest points and a few trivial contact
marks. A tiny planchet flake on the top of the 8, a barely
visible diagonal planchet depression right of star 1, and a
line of microscopic ticks over EN in CENT are the best iden-
tifying marks, and it takes a strong glass to see them. LDS
with a clearly defined rim cud break over D-STA.
Our
grade is AU58+, close to mint state.
Clearly superior to
the best examples of the variety in the Naftzger and Hol-
mes collections. A single mint state (MS60) example is
reported but unverified, so this piece is certainly very high
in the condition census. The attribution is shown on the
PCGS label.
PCGS population 1; finest of only 3
graded at PCGS for the variety.
Estimated Value .............................................. $2,000-UP

1836 N-7 R2 Gobrecht Head EF45
. The Gobrecht Head
design (the wavy-top head seen only on the N-6 and N-7 die
varieties). Glossy steel brown and light chocolate with mint frost
in protected areas. No spots or stains, very nice for the grade.
The only marks are a half dozen microscopic pinpricks at ES in
STATES. Sharply struck MDS. The fine die crack at TED-ST is
present but the rim cud in that area has not formed.
Estimated Value .......................................................$350-UP

1837 N-8 R1 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters AU50
.
Sharpness close to mint state but there is a small spot close
over the right side of the O in ONE, and this spot was lightly
scraped to remove some raised verdigris. Frosty light to medium
brown and steel. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and pro-
tected areas. M-LDS, Newcomb's #7. The die lines at ERICA are
gone and the die crack arcing through the legend at the top of
the reverse is clear. The dentils are worn but visible all the way
around both sides.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP
523
1837 N-9 R1 Beaded Hair Cord PCGS graded AU58
. Nice
glossy steel brown and light chocolate. Satiny mint frost covers
the protected areas on both sides and this cent offers excellent
eye appeal. No defects, only very light friction on the high-
points. M-LDS with numerous die cracks on the obverse and
two more on the reverse but no visible rim cuds.
Our grade is
AU50.
Estimated Value .......................................................$250-UP
