. Glossy medium
brown with frosty lighter brown toning in the protected
areas. Specks of slightly darker chocolate brown toning are
scattered throughout the obverse fields. The only notable
contact marks are a couple very light ones in the field
under star 11. MDS, die state c late, with a series of small
but clear rim cud breaks under the date extending to below
the stars at either side. The die cracks at stars 9 & 10 are
very fine and the reverse is uncracked. This is the Grellman
plate coin for the die state in his 2001 edition of the attribu-
tion guide for the large cents of 1840-1857.

. Very close to mint state in
sharpness but there is a dull rim nick between stars 7 & 8 that
catches your eye. Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye
appeal is excellent. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel
with a few tiny peeps of faded mint red showing on both sides.
M-LDS, die state d, with a fine die crack from UN to the dentils
off the tip of the wreath ribbon. The repunching at the base of
the 1 is weak but still visible.

1844/81 N-2 R2 Overdate 44 over Inverted 18 EF40
. Ten
points sharper but recolored glossy light olive and bluish steel
brown. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a faint
spot of reddish brown toning under star 8, a diagonal nick right
of the lower lip, and a small splash of slightly darker chocolate
toning at the bottom of the N in CENT. MDS, die state b. The
overdate feature is obvious to the unaided eye.
Removed
from a PCGS slab graded XF45
(PCGS label #397722.45/

1844/81 N-2 R2 Overdate 44 over Inverted 18 VF20
.
Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. No spots or stains,
but there are some light contact marks scattered over the
obverse. A dull diagonal nick in the field before the tip of the
nose is a good identifying mark. MDS, die state b. The 44 over
inverted 18 date punching error is strong. A popular "Redbook"
variety.

1844 N-3 R2 Repunched 18 EF40
. Sharpness EF45 or
slightly better but lightly cleaned and mostly retoned glossy tan
and light brown with overtones of light bluish steel and sea-
green in protected areas. No spots or stains. The only marks are
a thin nick on the chin and another on the upright of the E in
ONE. MDS, die state c, with 3 small but clear rim cud breaks at
star 8 reaching nearly to star 9. The repunching on the 18 is still
clear.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1844 N-3 R2 Repunched 18 MS60
. Frosty light reddish steel
brown and light chocolate with very faded red showing through
in protected areas on both sides. The notable marks are a dark
spot on the bottom edge of the inner half of the hair bun,
another on the N in UNITED, one more in the leaves under the
T in CENT, and a final spot in the dentils at the bottom of the
reverse. The only other defect is a faint planchet fissure (as
struck) from the lowest curl to the dentils right of star 13.
Scarce LDS, die state e, with a strong rim cud from right of star
9 down to the midway point between stars 10 & 11. This strong
cud is in addition to the earlier smaller rim cuds from above star
7 to over star 9. Tied for CC#6 of those known with the large
rim cud break.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP

1844 N-4 R2 AU55
. A mint state cent that has great eye
appeal, but there is a dull, very light scratch from star 2 to the
tip of the nose and a few more dull scratches at ENT in CENT.
Otherwise this cent is choice, free of any spots or stains. Lus-
trous light to medium steel brown. Sharply struck MDS, die
state c, with two narrow rim cud breaks at star 4 and a larger
one from star 5 to star 6. In addition a fine die crack reaches
through the top of UNITED.
