Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker
chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. Smooth and attrac-
tive for the grade showing only minor contact marks. A small
nick in the dentils under the 9 and a dull nick close under the E
in ONE are the best identifying marks. EDS. The obverse is
uncracked and the overdate feature is bold. An attractive exam-
ple of this very popular "Redbook" variety.
Our grade is con-
sistent with the slab grade.

1840 N-3 R1 Small Date PCGS graded MS62 Brown
.
Frosty medium steel brown with a hint of underlying reddish
steel brown faded from mint color bleeding through in the fields
and protected areas. A tiny spot of dark toning on the front
edge of the nose before the eye is the only notable mark, and it
is barely visible. The toning is attractive but this cent may have
been dipped long ago and nicely retoned over time. MDS, die
state b. The lump under the right end of the base of the 1 is dull
but clearly visible. The hair at the top of the ear is not quite fully
struck up but everything else is sharp.
Our grade is MS60,
tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted
on the PCGS label.

1840 N-4 R3 Small Date EF40
. The so-called 40 over 39
overdate. Very attractive glossy light to medium chocolate
brown with frost in the protected areas on both sides. No spots
or stains, just a few trivial ticks from flawless. Nicely struck E-
MDS, die state b. The three lumps under the date are clear
(these gave rise to the 40/39 overdate idea, which is inaccu-
rate). A narrow rim cud break shows from star 1 to under the
adjacent 1 and another shows at star 2.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1840 N-5 R1 Large Date VF35
. Very attractive glossy light to
medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter steel brown toning
on the highpoints. There are some small nicks scattered over
the obverse, including one on the cheek right of the nostril, but
overall the eye appeal of this cent is excellent for the grade.
Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The die lines from the dentils
over RICA are clear and the fields on the reverse are slightly
reflective.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP
