Brown
. Lustrous steel brown and golden tan with generous
traces of mellowed mint color remaining on both sides. The only
marks are a light diagonal nick over the peak of the 1 and
numerous faint specks of darker toning in the field around ONE
CENT. MDS, die state b early. The die lines at NI in UNITED are
very faint but still partially visible.

1842 N-6 R1 Large Date PCGS graded MS66 Brown,
CAC APPROVED
. Lustrous light steel and medium brown
with traces of mint red remaining in protected areas. A very
attractive cent with only a few trivial marks. The notable
ones are a thin diagonal nick near the hair under star 7, a
spot of dark toning in the dentils right of the date, and a
spot of darker toning on the lower loop of the wreath rib-
bon. LDS, die state d (Reiver's old N-10 variety). The die
lumps in the field at the lips and lowest curl are gone and a
tiny lump has formed near the leaf right of the bottom of
the E in ONE.
Our grade is MS63.
Tied for CC#2 honors
for the die variety and tied with one other example for fin-
est known in the late die state. The attribution is shown on
the PCGS label. Comes with a nice provenance.
Estimated Value .............................................. $1,500-UP

1842 N-6 R1 Large Date AU58
. Glossy reddish light choco-
late brown and steel. No spots or stains, and the only marks are
a very faint hairline scratch in the field left of stars 10-11 and a
shallow low spot on the neck (caused by debris on the die).
Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The lump in the field before the
upper lip and the other lump right of the curl at star 13 are
clear. In addition the die lines from the dentils to much of the
legend outside the wreath are visible. Just a hint of friction on
the highest points from mint state.
Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP

. Includes N-6 R1 Large Date E-MDS (a
late) EF40 net VF30 for recoloring, N-7 R3 Large Date MDS (b)
VF30, and N-8 R1 Large Date MDS (b) VF30 net VF25 for minor
nicks. All are glossy steel brown and chocolate with smooth sur-
faces. Lot of 3 coins.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP

1842 N-7 R3 Large Date MS60
. Slightly faded mint red mel-
lowing to light steel brown on the highpoints with more than
half the red remaining. Overtones of violet and steel show on
the reverse, mostly on the right side. This cent would rate a sig-
nificantly higher grade but there is a planchet lamination flaw in
the dentils from star 2 to star 3 (as struck). MDS, die state b.
The points up from the top of the E in AMERICA are gone but
the segmented line under ME is clear. Softly struck, as usual on
this variety, at the hair over the ear, the hair buns, and the
shoulder. (A fully struck example is unknown.) A nice cent in
spite of the planchet defect. CC#9 in the Grellman census.
Comes with an important provenance.
