1846 N-3 R2 Repunched 4 EF40
. Close to EF45 in sharpness
but there are a few too many tiny nicks for the higher grade. A
good identifying mark is a small rim nick off the end of the
wreath ribbon. Attractive glossy medium brown and light choco-
late with a small spot of darker chocolate brown toning under
TE in UNITED. Rare LDS, die state e, with strong rim cud breaks
over TES-OF. Tied for CC#6 honors among those known to
Grellman with these rim cuds. The repunching on the 4 is still
visible. And it comes with a nice provenance.

. Glossy chocolate brown
and steel. There is some dirt in protected areas but no rough-
ness. The only notable marks are a light diagonal nick in the
field right of the inner curl and a tiny rim bruise at the first S in
STATES. LDS, die state f, with a rim cud over TATES-OF. The rim
cud breaks are clear but the repunching on the 4 is faint. CC#8
of 12 known in the Grellman census.

1846 N-4 R1 Boldly Repunched Date MS62
. Very
attractive glossy light greenish olive brown with smooth,
slightly reflective fields on both sides thanks to a fresh die
polishing. No spots or stains, only a few tiny contact marks
on the obverse from choice. The notable ones are a pair of
tiny nicks on the jaw and a dull one in the field midway
between the chin and star 3. Rare LDS, die state d, with a
rim cud break under 184. A beautiful cent. CC#5 for the die
variety but finest of those known with the rim cud in the
Grellman census. The repunching on the date is still clearly
visible on all 4 digits.
Removed from an NGC slab
graded MS63BN
(NGC label #1756096-002, and it shows
the attribution). Comes with a nice provenance.

. Frosty medium
brown and light chocolate with satiny luster covering the fields
and protected areas on both sides. No spots or stains. The only
marks are a thin, very light diagonal nick high on the neck and a
tiny rim nick over the right top of the first T in STATES, and nei-
ther mark is visible without the aid of a glass. MDS, die state c,
with two small rim cud breaks at stars 10 & 11. The repunching
on the date is visible on all 4 digits, clearest on the 18.

1846 N-5 R2 Repunched Date PCGS graded MS63
Brown
. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with
some sea-green overtones in protected areas around CE in
CENT. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas.
The only defect is a small spot of powdery reddish carbon nes-
tled between two dentils under star 1. Rare LDS, die state d,
with a rim cud break over TA in STATES in addition to smaller
ones at stars 9, 10, & 11. Repunching is visible on all 4 digits of
the date, strongest on the 18.
Our grade is AU58 sharpness
net AU55.
Tied for CC#2 of those known with the single rim
cud in the Grellman census.
