ROOFLIKE
1846 N-10

1846 N-10 R4 MS63+
. Beautiful slightly faded mint red
fading to light steel brown, at least two-thirds of the mint
color is remaining. The devices are frosty while the fields
are smooth and reflective giving this cent the look of a
proof strike (which it may be). The only marks, and they
are trivial, are a speck of carbon hidden between two den-
tils under the right foot of the 1 in the date, a speck of dark
toning over the upper left point of star 7, and a shallow
planchet flake on the rim off the end of the wreath stem (as
struck). VEDS. The finest of only 3 mint state examples
known for this variety, and this one is the finest of that elite
group. A clear highlight among the late date cents being
offered in this sale.

1846 N-11 R1 Medium Date EF45+
. Choice glossy light to
medium chocolate brown. The fields are smooth and slightly
reflective giving this cent excellent eye appeal. The only
"defect" is some minor dirt nestled around the devices. Sharply
struck EDS, die state a. The fine die lines from the dentils under
the date are clear.

1846 N-12 R1 Tall Date AU50
. Glossy medium brown and
light chocolate with faint hints of faded mint color in a couple
protected places around ONE. May have been very lightly
cleaned on the highpoints long ago. The only marks are a nick
at the dentil tips over the left point of star 7 and a light diagonal
nick on the midpoint of the jawline. Sharply struck EDS, die
state a. A rare die state showing fine repunching left of the base
of the 4.
Removed from a PCGS slab graded AU55
(PCGS
label #1871.55/14891613 included).

1846 N-12 R1 Tall Date VF30
. Ten points sharper but
covered with tiny nicks, none significant but too many to
ignore, plus a barely visible rim bruise at the D in UNITED.
The planchet is smooth except for the area at ATES-OF-A
where there are numerous tiny planchet flakes or fissures,
apparently as struck. Nice glossy medium brown with frost
in protected areas on the reverse. Rare LDS, die state i,
with a connected series of rim cud breaks from star 1 to
star 5 with another at stars 5-6. The margins of these cuds
are very clearly defined and this cent is tied for finest of
only 13 known in this die state in the Grellman census. An
important cent and it comes with a decent provenance.

1846 N-14 R3 Tall Date, Repunched 1 PCGS graded
MS64 Brown
. Very attractive frosty medium brown and light
chocolate with hints of very faded underlying mint color bleed-
ing through in protected areas on the left side of the reverse.
Essentially flawless; a tiny vertical nick left of the top of the 8 is
a good identifying mark but it is barely visible. MDS, die state b.
There are faint die cracks at ED-ST but none at AME. The
repunching at the base of the 1 is clear.
Our grade is AU58,
tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown
on the PCGS label.
