1847 N-26 R5 VF20
. At least ten points sharper but recolored
frosty medium brown and light chocolate with peeps of faded
red in a few of the protected areas. There is some fine rough-
ness in the field from star 3 to star 8 but no verdigris. The only
notable sign of contact is a rim bruise at star 11. Rare LDS, die
state d, with a strong rim cud break over OF-A, and the right
end of this cud slants up to the left. Tied for CC#4 among those
known with this rim cud in the Grellman census.

1847 N-26 R5 VF25+
. Ten points sharper but there are a few
light scratches in the field behind the portrait and a shallow
planchet lamination flake at BE in LIBERTY extending into the
coronet and hair above (as struck). Otherwise this cent is
smooth and very attractive. Nice glossy medium brown and light
chocolate. Rare LDS, die state e, with a strong rim cud at OF-A,
and the right end of this cud slants up to the right. CC#6 of
those known in this die state according to the Grellman census.

1847 N-26 R5 VF35
. Sharpness AU50 but recolored
frosty medium brown and chocolate. The surfaces are
decent but a glass reveals spots of microscopic roughness
on both sides. The only contact mark is a small nick in the
dentils at star 10. Very rare LDS, die state f, with a strong
rim cud break over TE in STATES in addition to the earlier
one at OF-A. Both cuds are bold. CC#1 of only 12 known in
the Grellman census.
Removed from an NGC slab

(NGC
label #2593856-002 included, and it shows the attribution).

1847 N-26 R5 F15+
. Sharpness VF25 but there are some
microscopic contact marks scattered over the obverse and the
highpoints on the reverse are lighter than the fields thanks to a
very delicate cleaning. A nick in the field before the eye,
another on the rim over the second T in STATES, and a light rim
bruise over ME in AMERICA are the notable marks. Mostly
glossy reddish chocolate brown with lighter chocolate toning on
the highpoints. Very rare TDS, die state g. The rim cud over TE
in STATES now extends to over the adjacent S. This smaller cud
and the larger one at OF-A are both strong. Tied for CC#3 hon-
ors of only 11 known in this die state according to the Grellman
census.

1847 N-31 R5 Large 7 over Small 7 VF35
. Ten points
sharper but recolored medium brown and light chocolate with
peeps of faded red in protected areas. The only notable mark is
a spot of shallow carbon over the E in CENT. EDS, die state a,
without any die cracks on the reverse. The "Large 7 over Small
7" feature is obvious. A shallow low spot caused by debris on
the die has caused minor roughness between the date and star
1. To the unaided eye this cent looks nearly mint state.
