745
1849 N-28 R3 PCGS graded MS62 Brown
. Very attractive
glossy medium brown and light chocolate with underlying frosty
mint luster in the fields and protected areas. Tiny peeps of
faded mint color can be found on both sides. The only marks,
and they are trivial, are a pinprick on the left end of the cross-
bar of the 4 and a nick-like planchet void in the field off the bot-
tom of the hair bun (as struck). M-LDS, die state b late. Most of
the die lines behind ONE CENT are gone and a shallow low spot
covers most of the neck (caused by debris on the die).
Our
grade is AU50.
The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.

1849 N-29 R2 AU55
. Glossy medium brown and light choco-
late. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective thanks to a
fresh die polishing and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent.
Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The
best identifying mark is a tiny planchet chip off the end of the
wreath stem, as struck. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b, with
a series of narrow rim cud breaks from right of star 13 to under
the 849.

1849 N-29 R2 EF45+
. Slightly sharper but there are two
small rim nicks at star 8 and a tiny pinprick under the left side of
star 7. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with
frosty light bluish steel brown toning in protected areas. M-LDS,
die state d. The die lines from the neck are faint and the line at
NI in UNITED is gone. The earlier rim cuds under the date are
weak but still visible.

1849 N-30 R5 VF20
. Ten points sharper but there is a patch
of microscopic roughness from the front of the coronet to star
5, another even lighter patch over star 6, and a small area of
very light corrosion at the bottom of star 4. The only notable
contact mark is a tiny rim bruise at star 6. Otherwise the sur-
faces and eye appeal of this cent are excellent. Glossy medium
chocolate brown blending to olive brown in protected areas on
the reverse. E-MDS, die state a late. There is some swelling
inside the top of the N in ONE but no crumbling. Tied for CC#9
in the Grellman census.

1850 N-2 R1 Repunched 1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown
.
Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with traces of mint
red remaining on both sides. The only marks are a faint spot of
slightly darker chocolate toning in the center of the neck, a
speck of crud nestled between two dentils right of star 6, and a
small spot of darker chocolate toning over the N in ONE. Nicely
struck E-MDS, die state c, with a very fine die crack from ED in
UNITED to the dentils over the adjacent S. The fields on the
lower part of the obverse are covered with strong die lines and
the repunching on the 1 is clear.
Our grade is MS60+,
tied for
CC#9 with several other examples of the variety in the Grellman
census.
