1849 N-21 R4 AU58
. Lustrous medium chocolate brown and
steel. A beautiful cent with the lightest touch of friction on the
highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are some
barely visible planchet flakes on the rim at the bottom of the
obverse, as struck. LDS with a narrow irregular rim cud break
from star 5 to beyond star 8. Tied for CC#4 honors in the Grell-
man census for this tough variety.

1849 N-22 R1 MS63
. Lustrous light steel brown and choco-
late with underlying very faded mint color in the fields and pro-
tected areas on the obverse. The only marks are a small spot of
darker toning off the left point of star 6, another well hidden in
the hair right of the jawline, and two microscopic ticks between
stars 11 & 12. The surfaces are satiny and this cent offers excel-
lent eye appeal, especially on the obverse. M-LDS, die state c
(Newcomb's old #6). Die lapping has removed the earlier die
lines at the main and inner curls but the dull vertical line inside
the top of the E in CENT remains clear.

1849 N-22 R1 NGC graded MS64 Brown
. Frosty medium
steel brown with at least 5% of the original mint color remain-
ing on both sides. There are a few small spots of dark toning in
the hair over ERTY, a very light scuff on the cheek, and a minor
planchet lamination in the field left of star 11, as struck. M-LDS,
die state c (Newcomb's old #6). The die lines from the main
and inner curls are gone but the vertical line inside the top of
the E in CENT remains visible.
Our grade is MS60.

1849 N-26 R3 EF40
. Attractive glossy medium brown and
light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the
highpoints. Just a few light contact marks, the notable ones
being a nick over the right top of the T in CENT, another in the
field under that EN, and a small rim nick off the end of the
wreath ribbon. Otherwise this cent is close to EF45. Scarce EDS,
die state a, with myriad fine die lines near the dentils at stars 2-
4. A nice example of a variety that's difficult to find in high
grade.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

1849 N-28 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown
. Lus-
trous light olive and steel brown with frosty mint red cover-
ing at least a third of the planchet, mostly on the reverse. A
small puff of darker bluish steel toning on the 8 in the date
is the best identifying mark. MDS, die state b. Most of the
fine die lines seen on the reverse are now gone but the
ones from the N in ONE to EN in CENT are still visible. A
shallow low spot caused by debris on the die covers the
lower part of the neck. The reverse is flawless. Called MS63
and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #30889.
Our
grade is MS63,
CC#1 in the Grellman census for this die
variety. An important cent that comes with a great prove-
nance. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are shown
on the PCGS label.
