. Sharpness near mint
state but recolored glossy reddish chocolate brown and olive
with lighter brown toning in some of the protected areas. No

under the second 8 in the date. Rare LDS, die state c, with a
strong rim cud break under the 48, and this cud reaches the
base of the dentils under the 4. Not in the overall condition cen-

. Choice frosty steel brown with a trace of
mint red showing on the reverse. Attractive satiny mint luster
covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. No spots or
stains, and the only marks are some tiny ticks on the chin and
two microscopic rim nicks over ST in STATES, none visible with-
out the aid of a good glass. Just a hint of friction on the highest
points from mint state, and it has mint-state eye appeal. Scarce
EDS, die state a, without crumbling in the left notch of the sec-
ond 8.

1849 N-1 R4- AU55
. Attractive glossy medium chocolate
brown. Essentially flawless; the only mark is a light horizon-
tal nick in the center of the cheek, and this may be a pre-
striking planchet mark. Possibly lightly cleaned and retoned
long ago but the eye appeal of this cent is excellent.
Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b, with a strong die line
through the center of the O in OF (Newcomb's #15) but no
crumbling in the bottom of the R in AMERICA. A series of
narrow rim cuds shows clearly from star 6 to right of star 9.
Tied for CC#5 for the variety. Finest known of the die state
in the Grellman census, and the next best grades only
EF45.

under the left top of the E in CENT. A series of narrow rim cuds
covers most of the rim from star 5 to star 12.
