fading to steel brown on the devices, two-thirds of the orig-

inal red remaining. The only marks are a pair of thin, nick-

like planchet voids on the jaw, as struck. These two flaws

. Sharpness EF45 or better but there is

a reddish chocolate splash from star 4 to star 5 plus two smaller

splashes at stars 6 & 7 and a tiny one at the bottom of the I in

UNITED. These reddish splashes contains microscopic rough-

ness. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and the toning is

a very attractive glossy steel brown and light chocolate. Traces

of mint color show in protected areas on both sides. There are a

few light contact marks on the cheek. Nicely struck M-LDS, die

state c. Both dies have been lapped and a light die crack arcs

across the reverse from the D in UNITED to the R in AMERICA.

The fields on the reverse are slightly reflective thanks to the die

polishing. Not perfect but still one of the sharpest examples

known of this rare die variety. Tied for CC#7 in the Grellman

chocolate brown with faded red in protected areas on both

sides. The notable marks are a speck of carbon very well hidden

in the hair over the R in LIBERTY and two more in the field right

of the inner curl, plus a thin vertical nick in the field left of star

          12. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #16) with a die clash-

mark at the bottom of the neck plus die lapping lines covering

the obverse fields. The earlier die lines at the inner curl are

          gone.

Our grade is mint state sharpness net AU58+ for

          the tiny carbon spots.

A relatively modest cent that comes

with an impressive provenance. The attribution and Naftzger

provenance are shown on the PCGS label.

mark is a rather large spot of darker olive brown toning high on

the neck. Otherwise the only notable mark is a dull diagonal

nick between stars 8 & 9. E-MDS, die state a late. The die line

from the dentils to the right top of the E in AMERICA is sharp
