1846 N-15 R4 NGC graded MS64 Brown
. Frosty olive and
chocolate brown with delicate overtones of light bluish steel and
15% of the mint red remaining. The notable marks are a very
shallow planchet flake or lot spot in the field right of the lower
point of star 3 and a very thin vertical nick in the center of the
cheek. Sharply struck MDS, die state b. The die crack through
the top of UNITED is clear but not yet strong and there is a ver-
tical crack up to the dentils from the left top of the U.
Our
grade is MS62,
CC#6 in the Grellman census for this scarce
die variety.
Estimated Value .................................................... $2,500-UP

1846 N-15 R4 EF45+
. Five points sharper but there are a few
small contact marks scattered over the obverse while the
reverse is choice and very near mint state. The notable nicks
are a dull one on the coronet over the B in LIBERTY and a thin
horizontal nick on the ear right of the ear hole. In addition there
are a couple tiny, shallow planchet flakes right of the lower lip,
as struck. Very attractive frosty steel brown and light chocolate
with underlying very faded mint red peeking through in pro-
tected areas on the reverse. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b
early. The die cracks on both sides are very light and the
obverse fields still display the microscopic die polishing lines of
the earliest state. Very close to AU50. Tied for CC#8 honors in
the Grellman census.
Estimated Value .......................................................$350-UP

1846 N21 R5+ VF20
. Sharpness VF25 or slightly better but
lightly cleaned and nicely recolored frosty chocolate and light
olive brown. The only marks are a light vertical scratch from just
under the ear lobe down to the bottom of the neck and a very
light rim bruise over the second S in STATES. EDS, die state a.
Tied for CC#11 honors in the Grellman census for this rare vari-
ety.

1846 N-25 R5 Tall Date with Repunched 1 F15
. Glossy
dark chocolate brown with light chocolate toning covering the
devices. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are tiny contact
marks scattered over both sides, none notable. A good identify-
ing mark is a thin vertical nick in the field just left of the fore-
lock. MDS, die state b. Crumbling connects three dentils under
the end of the wreath stem. The line through the center of the
upright of the 1 is clear. A rare variety that is extremely difficult
to find in high grade. This piece is tied for CC#4 honors in the
Grellman census.
Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP
642
1846 N-26 R5 Tall Date, Repunched 1 F15
. Nice glossy
light to medium chocolate brown. Smooth and attractive for the
grade with only trivial contact marks. A tiny scratch across the Y
in LIBERTY is the only notable defect, and it is barely visible.
LDS, die state c, with extensive crumbling in the legend outside
the wreath. The horizontal line through the center of the
upright of the 1 is clear. A decent example of this tough variety,
tied for CC#12 in the Grellman census.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1847 N-1 R2 Repunched Date ANACS graded MS63
Brown
. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown. Satiny mint
frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers
excellent eye appeal. No spots or stains, and the only marks are
a few microscopic ticks on the cheek, none notable. E-MDS, die
state b, with a few fine die cracks on the reverse. The repunch-
ing on the date is clear on all 4 digits.
Our grade is AU55,
just a touch of friction on the highest points from mint
state.
The attribution is shown on the ANACS label.
