1843 N-4 R1 Petite Head, Large Letters EF45
. Ten points
sharper but myriad extremely light hairline scratches cover most
of the face and neck of Ms Liberty. Apparently these were added
intentionally because they are so uniform and done in a recur-
ring pattern. The scratches are not visible to the unaided eye so
the eye appeal remains quite nice. Lustrous frosty medium
brown and light chocolate with a swipe of slightly darker toning
from star 5 to star 7. E-MDS, die state b, with a series of clearly
defined rim cud breaks under the 184.

1843 N-5 R2 Mature Head MS60+
. Lustrous chocolate
brown and olive with 5-10% of the faded mint red remaining.
The surfaces are satiny and this cent offers outstanding eye
appeal for the grade. The only marks are a very light rim bruise
at NI in UNITED and a few subtle puffs of lighter golden steel
tan toning on the reverse. EDS, die state a. The fine die lines
from the dentils over MER are sharp. CC#5 in the Grellman cen-
sus.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,500-UP

Frosty chocolate brown and steel. This cent offers excellent eye
appeal and displays only a hint of friction on the highest points
of the devices. There are a few minor nicks on the jaw and neck
plus a half dozen shallow planchet chips on the rim under the
date. LDS, die state d, with a clearly defined rim cud break at
star 5.
Our grade is AU50+.

1843 N-6 R1 Mature Head with Repunched 18 NGC
graded MS64 Brown
. Very attractive frosty light to medium
chocolate brown. Essentially flawless with great eye appeal and
only a hint of friction on the highpoints. The only mark is a tiny,
barely visible tick under the lower lip. M-LDS, die state c, with a
narrow but clearly defined rim cud break over star 5. The
repunching under the 18 is weak but still visible.
Our grade is
AU50 choice.

1843 N-8 R3 Petite Head, Small Letters, Repunched 184
PCGS graded MS62 Brown
. Frosty light olive and steel brown
with slightly lighter tan toning covering the protected areas. The
obverse is choice but there are some tiny pits at the top of the
N in CENT plus a dozen small spots of darker toning, the largest
of these at the dentil tips right of the second A in AMERICA.
LDS, die state b, with crumbling between the nose and upper
lip. The repunching on the 183 remains clear.
Our grade is
AU55 sharpness net EF45+.
Estimated Value .......................................................$250-UP

1843 N-8 R3 Petite Head, Small Letters, Repunched 184
EF45
. Five points sharper but there is a small dig close over the
O in ONE. Otherwise this cent is quite attractive and displays
only a few trivial contact marks. Frosty medium brown and light
chocolate. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected
areas on both sides. LDS, die state b, with obvious crumbling at
the upper lip. In addition there is extensive crumbling around
the obverse rim that gives the appearance of rim cuds. The
repunching on the 184 remains visible.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1843 N-9 R3 Petite Head, Small Letters, Repunched 843

. Choice glossy light to medium chocolate brown. Satiny
mint frost covers the protected areas on the reverse. No spots
or stains. The only notable contact marks are some faint abra-
sions on the rim at the top of the obverse from star 5 to star 7,
perhaps to smooth a light rim bruise. MDS, die state b. The
repunching on the 843 is clear and points are visible from the
bases of EN in CENT.
Removed from a PCGS slab graded
AU55
(PCGS label #1844.55/27647595 included).
