1845 N-7 R5 EF40
. Repunched 84. Five points sharper but
there are some light nicks scattered over both sides, the notable
ones being a small rim nick at star 8 and a couple more at IT in
UNITED. Glossy light brown with darker steel brown toning on
the highpoints. Frosty luster shows in protected areas, espe-
cially on the reverse. MDS, die state b early. A fine die crack
passes through the top of MER to the dentils over the adjacent
I, and the repunching on the 84 is sharp. Tied for CC#8 honors
for this tough variety.

1845 N-9 R2 MS60
. Very attractive lustrous light bluish steel
brown fading to light olive in protected areas. Just a few tiny
spots of darker toning from flawless. Sharply struck M-LDS, die
state b late. The die crack from the U in UNITED to the rim
under the wreath ribbon is strong but the rim cud has not
formed. Very nice for the grade. Tied for CC#6 in the Grellman
census.

. Mint state sharpness but recolored glossy
golden tan and light olive with a swipe of reddish brown toning
at ED-STAT. The toning is odd but there are no marks or other
defects. Sharply struck MDS, die state b, with a die crack

1845 N-9 R2 EF45
. Attractive glossy light olive brown and
chocolate with traces of frosty lighter brown toning in protected
areas. The only notable mark is a nick on the throat. This cent
offers great eye appeal for the grade. Rare LDS, die state c,
with a small but clearly defined rim cud break under the end of
the wreath ribbon. Tied for CC#4 honors among those known
with the rim cud.

1845 N-9 R2 VF35
. Sharper by at least 5 points but there are
some tiny contact marks scattered over the obverse, none visi-
ble without a glass but too many to ignore. A collection of
microscopic pinpricks between the date and star 13 can help
identify this cent. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate.
Rare LDS, die state c, with a shallow but clearly defined rim cud
break under the end of the wreath ribbon. Tied for CC#8 hon-
ors among those known with the cud break in the Grellman cen-
sus.

. Sharpness AU50 but there is a nick on
the coronet over the I in LIBERTY and another on the jawline
near the earlobe. Otherwise this cent is choice and offers out-
standing eye appeal. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate
with satiny mint frost covering the protected areas on both
sides. LDS, die state c, with a small internal cud break resting
on the top of the E in UNITED. In addition there are a few shal-
low low spots (caused by debris on the die) inside the wreath. A
nice example of this tough die state.
