. Glossy light chocolate brown and steel
with lighter steel brown toning in the protected areas. Frosty
luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and
this cent offers excellent eye appeal, just a hint of friction from
mint state. The only mark is a light scrape on the outer edge of
the rim over star 6. E-MDS, die state b, with a very light die
crack from the dentils at S-O through the wreath to the dentils
at RI in AMERICA.

. Lustrous mint red fading to light
steel brown with a third of the mint color remaining, mostly
on the reverse. A choice cent if not for a few small spots of
darker olive brown and steel toning (not carbon) around
the earlobe and a couple more hidden in protected areas
around the hair bun. Extremely rare M-LDS, die state c,
with a small but clearly defined rim cud break over AM.
Tied for CC#5 overall for the variety but finest by a small
margin among less than a dozen known with the single rim
cud. This cent is plated inside the front cover of the second
(1987) edition of the Grellman book on late date cents.

. Five points sharper but there are some
light contact marks scattered over both sides, including a few
tiny nicks on the jaw and a very light horizontal scratch close
over CENT. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. An
attractive cent in spite of the minor marks. Rare LDS, die state
d, with clearly defined rim cud breaks at S-O and AM. CC#9 of
those known to Grellman in this rare die state.

. Attractive frosty medium steel brown
and light chocolate. Satiny mint luster covers the protected
areas on both sides. Very nice for the grade, essentially flawless
showing only microscopic ticks of no significance. MDS.

. Sharpness AU50 but very lightly
cleaned on the reverse leaving slightly lighter toning in the
fields inside the wreath. Otherwise this cent is choice and very
attractive for the grade. The best identifying mark is a tiny nick
on the nostril, and it is visible only under strong magnification.
Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter
steel brown toning in protected areas on the obverse. MDS, die
state a, before any rim cud breaks. Tied for CC#10 honors in
the Grellman census.

1847 N-11 R4 G6
. Sharpness F15 but there are several
patches of corrosion on both sides and they contain traces of
greenish verdigris. The most significant of these patches is in
the field between the face and star 4, and it is obvious. The
majority of the planchet is smooth and attractive. Glossy
medium chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning cover-
ing the devices. Rare LDS, die state c, with rim cud breaks at
stars 9 & 11. Both cuds are bold on this example.
Estimated Value .........................................................$50-UP

1847 N-12 R3 Repunched 8 VF30
. Five points sharper with
a swipe of darker toning at the O in ONE. No notable contact
marks or other defects. Glossy medium brown and light choco-
late. LDS, die state c, with a rim cud break from star 9 nearly to
star 10. The repunching inside the top of the 8 is sharp.
Removed from an NGC slab graded AU55BN
(NGC label
#679548-007 included, and it shows the attribution).
