1849 N-2 R1 MS63
. Very attractive lustrous bluish light
steel brown and olive. Generous traces of mellowed mint
red show on the obverse and mint color covers at least
20% of the reverse. The only marks are a few microscopic,
very light nicks in the field off the chin and a subtle spot of
slightly darker toning under the N in ONE. The fields are
covered with satiny mint frost and this cent offers great eye
appeal. E-MDS, die state i, with obvious swelling and crum-
bling on the reverse. Crumbling covers the top of berry 4
(the one left of the O in ONE) but it has not formed
between leaves 12 & 14 (the leaves under AT in STATES).
Tied for CC#5 honors in the Grellman census where the fin-
est grades only slightly better at MS64. Comes with the
fancy collection pillbox from Dr. French.

1849 N-3 R3 EF40
. Five points sharper but there are a few
thin swipes of dark toning on the cheek and neck while the
remainder of the planchet is a nice glossy medium brown and
light chocolate. The highpoints of the portrait are slightly lighter
thanks to a rub while the reverse is choice. Tiny peeps of faded
mint red can be found along the back edge of the portrait. E-
MDS, die state e early, with crumbling that connects the M & E
in AMERICA to the leaf below but no crumbling inside the bot-
tom of the E in CENT.

1849 N-3 R3 EF40

attractive for the grade. The only marks are a tiny planchet
flake on the throat, as struck, and a small spot between stars 6
& 7. Scarce VLDS, die state v, with extensive crumbling on the
reverse.

1849/8 N-8 R2 So-called Overdate 9 over 8 AU50
. Sharp-
ness close to mint state but lightly cleaned and retoned frosty
steel brown and light greenish olive. The only mark is a small,
barely visible spot of darker toning near the dentils above star
9. M-LDS, die state c. The repunching at the right bottom of the
9 is weak but still visible and a die crack meanders through the
legend outside the wreath. The doubling on the reverse is clear
(a doubled die).

1849 N-10 R3 EF45
. Frosty medium chocolate brown mixed
with some lighter brown and chocolate tones on both sides. A
couple faint hints of very faded mint color can be found on the
reverse. There are a few light contact marks on both sides,
none notable. A small planchet void on the rim under the fold of
the wreath ribbon is a good identifying mark. Scarce LDS, die
state d. The obverse die has been lapped to remove roughness,
although some roughness remains around stars 3-9, and there
are narrow rim cud breaks at stars 12 & 13.
Removed from
an NGC slab graded AU53
(NGC label #1848658-001
included, and it shows the attribution).
