1850 N-3 R1 NGC graded MS66 Brown
. Beautiful and
highly lustrous bluish steel and light olive brown with faded
mint color showing in the protected areas on both sides, espe-
cially on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers the surfaces,
including on the highest points of the devices. No spots or
stains. The only mark is a very light vertical scratch in the field
left of star 12. E-MDS, die state a late. The die lines from the
dentils over the E in AMERICA are weak but visible while the
short line at the throat is clear.
Our grade is MS63,
tied for
CC#4 in the Grellman census. The Agora Collection provenance
is shown on the NGC label.

1850 N-3 R1 MS62
. Lustrous glossy steel brown and choco-
late with underlying faded mint color showing through in the
fields and protected areas on both sides. The only marks, and
they are barely visible, are a delicate spot of darker toning at
the dentil tips under star 10 and a speck of similar toning close
to the leaf over the left edge of the E in ONE. LDS, die state c.
All the fine die lines seen in the earlier states are gone. A very
attractive cent and it comes with an impressive provenance.
Tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census.

Trio of 1850 Cents graded EF45
. Includes N-4 E-MDS (a)
(removed from a PCGS slab graded AU58, label #1889.58/
21964529 included), N-9 R2 EDS (a), and N-9 MDS (b). A cou-
ple are slightly sharper with minor defects. Lot of 3 coins.

1850 N-5 R4 NGC graded MS60 Brown
. Glossy medium
chocolate brown with mint frost showing in the protected areas.
Looks choice to the unaided eye but a glass reveals about a
dozen microscopic specks of carbon that are just starting to
form on both sides. The largest of these is on the left side of the
8 and on the left top of the second T in STATES. These specks
appear to be superficial at this point but timely treatment with a
protective product (Care, Blue Ribbon, etc.) is recommended to
"nip this in the bud." Rare EDS, die state a. Both segments of
the vertical line down from the inner hair bun are clear and the
lines from the main curl are sharp.
Our grade is EF45+, close
to AU50.

Group of Five 1850 Cents grading VF25 to VF35
. Average
grade is VF30. Includes N-5 R4 MDS (b), M-11 R3 MDS (a late),
N-14 R4 MDS (c), N-22 R3+ LDS (c), and N-23 R2 MDS (b). A
couple are slightly sharper with minor defects but all are attrac-
tive for the grade. Lot of 5 coins.

1850 N-7 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Brown
. Lustrous steel
brown and light chocolate. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet
and the eye appeal is excellent. The only marks are a swipe of
slightly darker brown toning between star 3 and the dentils and
a speck of greenish crud on the right pendant of the first T in
STATES. E-MDS, die state b early. The die lines at the inner and
main curls are clear.
Our grade is MS60+.

1850 N-9 R2 NGC graded MS65 Brown
. Attractive lustrous
steel brown and light chocolate with 10% of the original mint
red remaining on each side. Nearly void of marks or any other
defects. A microscopic speck of dark toning on the front edge of
the nose can help identify this cent. MDS, die state b. There is a
die crack through the tops of ME to the dentils over the adja-
cent A but the die lines from the dentils left of star 6 remain vis-
ible.
Our grade is MS63.

. Lustrous frosty
steel brown and chocolate with generous traces of faded mint
color remaining. Excellent eye appeal, just a few trivial marks
from flawless. A tiny spot of dark toning close before the bust
tip is the best identifying mark. MDS, die state b, with a die
crack through the top of ME in AMERICA.
Our grade is MS62.
