1852 N-17 R1 Repunched 1 MS60+
. Frosty medium brown.
Sharp and nearly flawless, just a bit dull on the reverse for a
higher grade. The only marks are a small rim nick under the tip
of the wreath ribbon and a tiny speck of dark toning at the left
end of the top of the E in CENT. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state
b early. The repunching under the base of the 1 is clear and a
small lump has formed at the base of the crossbar of the E in

. Frosty medium steel brown and light choco-
late with traces of faded mint color remaining, mostly on
the obverse. No spots or stains and only a few trivial marks.
The notable defects are a tiny planchet void (as struck) in
the field over the right point of star 2 and nicks on the 185
in the date. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. This is a rare
die state for the variety and it clearly shows the fine
repunching at the dentils under the 1 and the top of a stray
1 imbedded in the bust over the left side of the 8. Appar-
ently someone at the mint was playing with the 1 punch.
Our grade is MS60,
tied for CC#6 honors in the Grellman
census.

overtones of frosty sea-green on the reverse. The only mark is a
small spot of lighter reddish steel toning hidden on the lower
fold of the wreath ribbon. MDS, die state a, before any die
cracks or rim cuds. The die lines from the dentils at star 13 to
the date are dull but still visible.

1852 N-20 R4 VF30+
. Close to VF35 but there is a very light
rim bruise at star 4 and another at ST in STATES. Neither mark
is significant and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. Glossy
light olive brown and chocolate. Extremely rare TDS, die state c,
with two strong rim cud breaks on the obverse, the first at star
11 and the second over star 8. CC#2 of 13 examples known in
the Grellman census. Noyes photo #30182.

. Sharper by at least 5 points but there are
several rim nicks and light rim bruises on the obverse, especially
from star 1 to the date. No roughness. Glossy light olive and
steel brown. Rare LDS, die state c, with two rim cud breaks on
the obverse, one at star 8 and another at star 11. Both cuds are
clearly defined but each has a few light contact marks. Tied for
CC#9 for the die state in the Grellman census.

1852 N-21 R4 AU58
. A lustrous mint state cent but there are
a half dozen small spots of very fine carbon on the obverse and
a couple more on the reverse. The notable spots are one on the
upper right point of star 1, one above and another below star
10, and one on the E in CENT. Otherwise this cent is a very
attractive lustrous light bluish steel brown and olive with under-
lying faded mint red covering the protected areas on both sides.
LDS, die state c. A fine die crack reaches from the coronet
through star 5 to the dentils to the left, and a die clashmark
shows at the left top of the N in CENT.
Very close to net
MS60.
Tied for CC#8.
