1853 N-29 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown
. Lustrous
mint red fading to bluish steel and olive brown with about a
third of the mint red remaining. The notable marks are a thin,
faint streak of darker toning caused by planchet impurity from
the top of the head to the lower points of star 8 and a tiny,
barely visible scuff that breaks the frost in the field close before
the chin. MDS, die state b. The die lines at the throat are gone
and the ones from the dentils at stars 1-2 are dull but still visi-
ble.
Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade,
tied for
CC#3 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the
PCGS label.

1853 N-30 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Brown
. Lustrous bluish
steel and olive with 10-15% of the mint red remaining. Satiny
mint frost covers the planchet and this cent offers excellent eye
appeal. The only defects are a shallow low spot on the neck
under the earlobe (caused by debris on the die) and a tiny arch-
shaped struck-through line under the base of the 1 (also as
struck). EDS, die state a. The fine die lines from the dentils at
star 13 are clear. A very nice cent with lots of original mint color
for a "BN" designation.
Our grade is MS63,
tied for CC#4 in
the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the PCGS
label.

1853 N-31 R4+ VF35
. Ten points sharper but recolored
glossy steel brown and light chocolate and hints of lighter red-
dish brown toning on some of the highpoints. Nice eye appeal in
spite of the retoning. A tiny rim nick just right of star 7 is the
only notable mark. MDS, die state b. The die lines from the den-
tils to the top of RI in AMERICA are dull but still visible and the
fields outside the wreath are slightly rough from die erosion.
Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58BN
(NGC label
#3313373-010 included, and it shows the attribution).
