1856 N-20 R3+ Upright 5 AU50
. Sharpness close to mint
state but recolored glossy medium to dark chocolate brown. No
spots or stains. The only notable mark is a small, light diagonal
nick on the rim under the 5. M-LDS, die state c, with a die crack

1856 N-21 R2- Italic 5 PCGS graded MS64+ Red &
Brown
. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown on
the devices with nearly half the mint red remaining. Only
trivial marks from flawless. The notable ones are a speck of
dark toning near the dentils between stars 7 & 8, another
speck over the brow lock, and a dull nick or pre-striking
planchet mark on the rim over IT in UNITED. M-LDS, die
state a late or b early. The diagonal die line from the dentils
to the top of the second S in STATES is dull and barely visi-
ble. A beautiful cent.
Our grade is MS63+, close to
MS64.
CC#3 for the variety in the Grellman census. The
attribution and Rasmussen-Boka provenance are noted on
the PCGS label.

1857 N-1 R1 Large Date PCGS graded MS64 Red &
Brown
. Lustrous bluish steel and olive with at least a third of
the mellowed mint red remaining. No spots or stains. The only
marks are a nick-like pre-striking planchet chip between the
bust tip and star 1 and a tiny pinprick on the end of the chin. E-
MDS, die state a. The die lines over NI in UNITED are dull but
visible and the top of a stray 18 in the dentils under the 8 is
clear.
Our grade is MS63.
A nice example of this very popular
final year for our beloved large cents. The attribution and "MPD"
status are shown on the PCGS label.

1857 N-1 R1 Large Date AU50+
. Attractive glossy light
chocolate brown with frosty luster showing in protected areas
on the reverse. The only marks are a tiny spot of darker choco-
late toning on the rim under the 7 in the date and a very light
diagonal scratch on the throat. Sharply struck EDS, die state a.
The top of a badly misplaced 1 shows clearly in the dentils
below the 8 and the fine die lines from the dentils over UNI are
sharp. Very nice for the grade, close to AU55.
Removed from
an ANACS slab graded AU58
(ANACS label #2991371
enclosed).
