. Lus-
trous golden tan and light brown with faded mint color showing
in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. No spots or stains.
Nearly flawless except for a small rim nick over the right top of
the second T in STATES. Sharply struck M-LDS, die state c. The
die lines from the dentils over the R in AMERICA are gone.
Our
grade is MS62,
tied for CC#9 in the Grellman condition census
for the variety. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.

1856 N-13 R2 Italic 5 VF30
. Attractive glossy medium brown
and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and display only
trivial contact marks, none notable. A very tiny rim nick over the
left side of the M in AMERICA can help identify this cent. Very
rare LDS, die state d, with a strong rim cud from just above star
10 down to star 11. Tied for CC#8 of 16 known with this rim
cud in the Grellman census.

1856 N-13 R2 Italic 5 VF30
. Glossy medium chocolate
brown and steel. Possibly lightly cleaned and retoned but the
eye appeal is nice for the grade. The only marks are a fresh
scuff in the dentils at stars 3-4 and several small rim nicks on
the right side of the reverse, the strongest of these over the E in
AMERICA. LDS, die state d, with a strong rim cud from star 10
to star 11. Tied for CC#8 of 16 known with this single cud.

1856 N-13 R2 Italic 5 VF30
. Sharper by at least 5 points but
there are too many light nicks scattered over the obverse for
the higher grade. The notable marks are a dull pinprick midway
between stars 1 & 2 and another near the dentils over star 3,
plus a dull diagonal nick over the right top of the N in ONE.
Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Nice eye appeal in
spite of the minor marks. Rare TDS, die state e, with a large,
strong rim cud break from star 9 to star 11. Tied for CC#5 of 20
known in this die state according to the Grellman census.
Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58BN
(NGC label
#308061-016 included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver
provenance).

1856 N-13 R2 Italic 5 F15+
. Ten points sharper but there
are a few scratches on the portrait and some small nicks scat-
tered over the obverse. The most notable of these marks is a
scratch from under the eye down to the 1 in the date. All the
contact marks blend into the toning and the eye appeal remains
decent. Glossy light olive brown and chocolate. Rare TDS, die
state e, with a strong rim cud break from star 9 to star 11.
CC#13 of 20 known in this die state.

1856 N-14 R1 Italic 5 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown
.
Frosty light steel brown with subtle overtones of light bluish
steel. Mint red covers 15-20% of the planchet. There are a few
tiny specks of carbon scattered over the obverse, none visible
without the aid of a glass. This cent looks choice but a strong
glass reveals several microscopic hairline scratches on the neck
and jaw with some escaping into the field before the neck.
MDS, die state b, the usual hoard die state for the variety. As
usual the strike at the top of the obverse and the opposing area
at the bottom of the reverse is a bit soft while everything else is
nicely struck.
Our grade is net AU58.

1856 N-14 R1 Italic 5 MS62
. Lustrous steel brown and light
chocolate with 10% of the slightly faded mint color remaining.
An attractive cent, nearly flawless. A speck of dark toning in the
dentils right of star 12 and another at the dentils under the 8 in
the date are good identifying marks. MDS, die state b. The
strike at the top of the coronet and above the head is nearly
full, much better than usual for this variety.
