1853 N-13 R1 Repunched 1 AU58
. A mint state cent that
was dipped and has just started to retone. Has the luster and
look of a red uncirculated cent. No spots or stains. The only
mark is a tiny diagonal nick on the midpoint of the jawline. M-
LDS, die state b. The tiny points from the E in CENT are gone
but the repunching on the base of the 1 in the date remains
clear.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP

1853 N-14 R3 Repunched 1 NGC graded MS63 Brown
.
Lustrous medium chocolate brown and steel with peeps of mint
red remaining on the obverse. Satiny mint frost covers the fields
and protected areas on both sides. No spots or stains, just a
few light contact marks. A diagonal nick in the field under the
chin and a nick on the truncation over the 8 are the notable
defects. LDS, die state e, with a series of narrow rim cud breaks
from star 10 down to star 13. The cuds are small but clearly
defined and this is a very nice example of the late die state. The
fine repunching under the base of the 1 is faint, nearly worn off
the die.
Our grade is MS60+.
Tied for CC#9 for the die vari-
ety in the Grellman census but CC#2 of the LDS. The attribution
is shown on the NGC label.
Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP

1853 N-15 R2 Repunched 5 NGC graded MS62 Brown
.
Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with peeps of faded
mint color showing in some of the protected areas on both
sides. Nice eye appeal and only a few trivial marks. The notable
ones are a faint horizontal hairline scratch from the nose to the
dentils over star 3 and a speck of crud between stars 8 & 9
(probably removable). MDS, die state b. The repunching at the
left top of the 5 is bold.
Our grade is MS60.

1853 N-16 R1 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown
.
Mostly lustrous mint red mellowing to light steel brown on
the highpoints. Two thirds of the mint color remains, and
the reverse is nearly full red that is just starting to mellow.
The only marks are a small, light nick on the rim under the
left side of the 1 in the date, a small spot at the lower point
of star 12, and a puff of light steel brown toning at the first
S in STATES. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a. The die
clashmarks at the throat and over the O in ONE are visible
but fading. Sharply struck with fully defined radial lines on
all the stars. A very nice cent.
Our grade is MS64,
tied for
CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger
provenance are shown on the PCGS label.
