1857 N-5 R5+ PCGS graded PR65 Red & Brown,
CAC
APPROVED
. A sharp, gorgeous example of this proof-only
Small Date variety. Lustrous electric blue steel and light
chocolate with faded mint color covering the protected
areas, mostly on the obverse. Nearly flawless. The only
marks are a small spot of shallow carbon on the jawline
over the throat, a microscopic speck of carbon between
stars 7 & 8, and a barely visible speck of carbon on the rim
under star 1. The reverse is absolutely pristine. The fields
on both sides are covered with microscopic die polishing
lines, as always on this variety, and the fields are not quite
as reflective as those on other proof varieties from the
1840's and 50's.
Our grade is Proof-64+, very close to
Proof-65,
and CC#3 in the Grellman census.
PCGS pop-
ulation 7; 1 finer in 66RB.
Only 238 minted.

Large Cent Blank Planchet with Upset Rims in an NGC
"Mint Error" slab
. Glossy light chocolate brown. No corrosion
but there are some faint hairline scratches on both sides mixed
with the usual collection of tiny nicks. The rims are upset
(Breen's stage II) indicating this planchet was ready for striking.
The rims are fairly wide which suggests the planchet was pre-
pared for a Mature Head cent (1843-1857). The weight is
shown as 10.7 grams on the NGC label, which equates to 166.3
grains versus the mint standard of 168.0 grains for large cents.
The NGC label calls this a "Mint Error" which is debatable since
planchets were manufactured outside the mint.

480G-2a Rarity-9 NGC graded MS64 Brown

frosty steel brown with delicate overtones of light bluish steel.

the variety by NGC. The attribution is shown on the NGC label.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

Ma-Sp 72 (Bolen JAB-22) in Copper Rarity-6+ NGC

and chocolate with faded red in protected areas. Sharply struck
and very attractive. The only defects are a few tiny specks of
darker toning at the top of the obverse. Only 14 of these were
struck in copper by Bolen, and this is a very nice one. The Bolen
attribution is noted on the NGC label. Diameter 28mm.
