1856 N-3 R1 Italic 5 AU50
. Mint state sharpness but there is
dull dent on the right side of the wreath that affects the E in
ONE and T in CENT. In addition there is a faint puff of very fine
carbon in the field at the tip of the nose and a speck of greenish
verdigris on the first lower leaf left of the wreath ribbon. A light
rim bruise over the E in AMERICA rounds out the defects on an
otherwise sharp, attractive cent. Lustrous steel brown and light
chocolate. LDS, die state g, with two die cracks on the reverse
and a rim cud from star 12 to star 13. Not in the overall condi-
tion census for the variety but CC#6 of those known with the
rim cud.

1856 N-6 R1 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS65 Brown
. Lus-
trous light steel brown with underlying faded mint color show-
ing through in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are
covered with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal is excellent.
The only defect is a tiny splash of light green powder at the bot-
tom of star 6 (most likely easily removable). Sharply struck EDS,
die state a. The peak of a stray 1 is clearly visible at the bust tip
and fine die finishing lines are visible at S-OF-A.
Our grade is
MS63.

1856 N-6 R1 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown
.
Lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate with nearly a
third of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Sharp
and attractive. The notable marks are an arc of slightly darker
toning at the dentils over star 11, a spot of darker chocolate
brown toning between the A & M in AMERICA, and a patch of
similar toning at the bottom of the N in ONE. These small areas
of darker toning are just toning, not carbon. EDS, die state a.
The die defect at the bust tip is sharp and the fine die lines at S-
OF-A are visible.
Our grade is MS63.

on the PCGS label.

1856 N-6 R1 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown
.
Frosty light steel brown faded down from mint color with 20%
of the red remaining. Choice except for a series of nicks on the
rim from below star 4 to star 6 and a small carbon spot on the
leaf tip over the end of the wreath ribbon. LDS, die state c. The
point from the bust tip is dull and barely visible and all the die
lines found in the early state are gone. This variety is common
in mint state but only in the early die state. Uncirculated exam-
ples in the late state are rare.
Our grade is MS60.

1856 N-7 R2 Upright 5 NGC graded MS63 Brown
. Lus-
trous golden tan and light brown with hints of light bluish steel
overtones in protected areas. A very attractive cent, just a few
microscopic specks of darker toning from flawless. A barely visi-
ble scuff under the I in AMERICA is the best identifying mark.
Sharply struck M-LDS, die state c. A faint die crack extends from
the bust tip to near the upper right point of star 1 and a fine
radial die line is visible down the right edge of the second T in
STATES. The die clashmarks over EN in CENT are gone.
Our
grade is MS60+.
The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1856 N-7 R2 Upright 5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown
. Choice
medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel
brown toning on the highpoints. No spots, stains, or contact
marks, but there is a hint of rub on the very highest points of
the devices. Scarce EDS, die state a, before the die crack from
the bust tip into the field near star 1. The die clashmarks over
EN in CENT and at the right top of that T are clear.
Our grade
is AU58+, very close to MS60.
This cent offers outstanding
eye appeal for the grade.
