1853 N-20 R3 Boldly Repunched 53 PCGS graded MS63
Brown
. Choice lustrous steel brown and light chocolate. Peeps
of mint red remain visible on both sides and this cent offers
excellent eye appeal. The only mark is a thin vertical nick on the
cheek right of the nostril. E-MDS, die state b early. The fine die
lines at RI in AMERICA are gone but the repunching under the
53 remains obvious.
Our grade is AU58+, very close to
MS60.

1853 N-21 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown
. Frosty
steel brown with at least 10% of the mint red remaining, even
more on the obverse. Hines of light bluish steel overtone cover
the reverse. Excellent eye appeal. The only notable mark is a
dull horizontal nick in the field over the tip of the coronet. Oth-
erwise this cent is choice. LDS, die state b. The diagonal die
lines from the curl at star 13 are gone and the fields on both
sides are flowlined.
Our grade is MS62,
CC#9 for the variety
in the Grellman census. Housed in an old green label PCGS "rat-
tler" holder.

. Lightly cleaned,
now toned golden tan and light steel brown. No spots or stains.
The only marks are a few light nicks on the rim at the top of the
reverse. LDS, die state b. The die lines fro the dentils at star 2
are faint and the fields are flowlined.
Our grade is EF45
sharpness net EF40.

Pair of 1853 Cents in Rare Die States
. Includes N-21 R4
EDS (a) graded VF30 and an N-23 R4 EDS (a) graded VF35
(removed from an NGC slab graded AU55, label #3313373-007
included). The earliest die lines from the dentils at star 1 on the
N-21 are dull but still visible, and the earliest die lines described
for the N-23 variety in the Grellman book are clear (as is the
stray 4 punched into the back of the ear). A nice pair of cents,
both attractive glossy brown and chocolate. Lot of 2 coins.

1853 N-26 R2 PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown
.
Attractive lustrous mint red fading to steel brown and light
olive with at least half the mint color remaining, mostly on
the obverse. This cent offers great eye appeal. The only
marks are a few specks of darker toning scattered over
both sides, none notable, and traces of an old fingerprint
between stars 12 & 13. E-MDS, die state b. The fine die
lines over ERI in AMERICA are gone but both of the points
down from the main curl over the inner curl are clear.
Called MS63+ and tied for CC#2 honors in the Noyes cen-
sus, his photo #30681.
Our grade is MS64+,
CC#3 in the
Grellman census behind two marginally finer MS65 exam-
ples. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are shown
on the PCGS label.

. Glossy light olive and steel mixed with
medium chocolate. Flowline luster covers the fields and this
cent has mint state eye appeal. Just a hint of friction on the
highest points. Two tiny nicks on the rim over TE in UNITED are
the notable marks. MDS, die state b. The dull die lines from the
dentils at stars 4 & 12 are weak but visible.
