1851 N-45 R4 PCGS graded MS63 Brown
. Nice lus-
trous medium brown and steel with underlying faded mint
red in protected areas on the top of the reverse. Satiny
mint frost covers the planchet and this cent offers excellent
eye appeal. A tiny pre-striking planchet flake in the center
of the cheek is the only mark, and it is only visible with the
aid of a good glass. LDS, die state b, with a final die crack
from near star 4 through the coronet to the left point of
star 8.
Our grade is MS60+,
CC#2 for the die variety in
the Grellman census. The PCGS label shows the attribution.

1851 N-45 R4 AU50
. Mint state sharpness but this cent has
been lightly cleaned and nicely retoned olive and steel brown.
The surfaces are lustrous and free of spots or contact marks.
However there is an obvious planchet lamination on the rim at
the bottom of the reverse (as struck). MDS, die state a late or b
early. The terminal die crack from near star 4 through the head
to star 8 is only partially formed and very faint. Tied for CC#9 in
the Grellman census.

1852 N-5 R2+ MS63+
. Beautiful lustrous mint red mel-
lowing to steel brown and light olive on the devices with
about half the mint red remaining. No spots or stains, only
a few trivial contact marks. A very light nick left of star 6, a
couple microscopic marks in the field off the chin, and a
light scuff on the E in ONE can help identify this cent.
Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with crisp diagonal die lines
from the dentils at star 13. A beautiful cent, close to MS64.
CC#3 in the Grellman census.
