1854 N-19 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown
. Lustrous mint
red fading to steel brown and light chocolate with 20% of the
mint color remaining (must have been very close to an "RB"
designation from PCGS). Frosty and essentially flawless except
for low spots caused by debris on the dies (most likely excess
lubricating grease). A shallow low spot covers the ear, cheek,
and the upper part of the neck causing those design details to
be blunted. MDS, die state b, with a fine but clear die crack arc-
ing across the obverse from the dentils at star 3 through the top
of the head to the dentils at star 9. A nice example of this pop-
ular variety.
Our grade is MS60+,
tied for CC#4 for the vari-
ety in the Grellman census.
Removed from an ANACS slab
graded MS63RB
(ANACS label #2785796 included).

1854 N-27 R3- PCGS graded MS65 Red & Brown
.
Very attractive lustrous mint red fading to steel brown on
the devices with nearly a third of the mint red remaining on
each side. Great eye appeal, just a few trivial marks from
flawless. The notable marks are a tiny planchet flake on the
right end of the nostril (as struck), a speck of darker toning
in the field close before the lower lip, a dull nick hidden in
the dentils under the 4, and a diagonal nick on the rim over
the M in AMERICA. M-LDS, die state c, with the reverse
rotated 75 degrees clockwise relative to the usual head-to-
foot die orientation. The lump on the bust seen in the early
state is gone and the dash over the 8 is faint. Graded MS64
and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #31377.
Our
grade is MS63+, very close to MS64.
CC#2 in the
Grellman census for the variety but finest of those known
with the rotated reverse. The attribution is shown on the
PCGS label.

1854 N-28 R5- VF25
. Glossy light chocolate brown and steel.
Smooth and attractive for the grade. A tiny rim bruise right of
star 9 is the only notable mark. MDS, die state b. The fine verti-
cal die lines seen at the O & C in ONE CENT in the early state
are gone.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP

1855 N-1 R3 Upright 5's AU55
. Glossy medium brown with
underlying mint frost covering the fields and protected areas.
Great eye appeal for the grade. The only mark is a tiny planchet
flake just right of the upper lip, as struck. Just a hint of friction
on the highest points from mint state. LDS die state c. The
fields are smooth thanks to a fresh die lapping and the point
from the left side of the 8 is gone.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

trous golden steel and light olive with subtle overtones of sea-
