1855 N-4 R1 Upright 5's PCGS graded MS64 Brown
.
Frosty olive and bluish steel with 25% of the obverse showing
faded mint color while the reverse displays overtones of sea-
green. The only mark is a tiny speck of carbon between the chin
and star 2. Sharply struck EDS, die state a.
Our grade is
MS62.

1855 N-4 R1 Upright 5's MS63
. Very attractive lustrous mint
red fading to light steel brown on the devices, nearly half the
original mint color remaining. No spots or stains. The only
defects are a light scuff on the chin and a small nick on the rim
over the T in UNITED. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The
reverse die is uncracked. Housed in an old Dr. French collection
box marked as lot 796 in that B. Max Mehl 1929-1930 sale, but
this is not the same coin.

. Five points sharper but there
are a few light contact marks on the face and neck, none visible
without a glass. Attractive glossy light chocolate brown. LDS,
die state d, with two clearly defined rim cud breaks over TE in
STATES.

. Very attractive glossy
medium brown and light chocolate with frosty mint luster cover-
ing the protected areas on both sides. No defects, just a trace
of friction on the highest points from mint state. Rare LDS, die
state f, with a series of 4 strong rim cud breaks over STATES.
Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS63BN
(old green
PCGS "rattler" label #01907.63/9105760 included).

. Sharpness close to mint
state but there are some small nicks on the neck and jaw plus a
couple more in the field right of the main curl. A spot of dark
crud between the front edge of the coronet and star 5 is the
best identifying mark. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate
with hints of frosty lighter reddish steel brown in protected
areas. Rare TDS (terminal die state) with a series of 5 rim cud
breaks over STATES-OF. All 5 of the rim cuds are clear.
Removed from an NGC slab graded MS61BN
(NGC label
#453853-019 included, and it shows the attribution).

1855 N-5 R5- Upright 5's VF25
. Glossy medium brown fad-
ing to chocolate brown in protected areas. The only marks are a
very light scuff on the cheek left of the ear, a thin diagonal nick
in the dentils under the first 5, and a tiny rim bruise over the
second T in STATES. MDS, die state b. A decent example of the
rarest business strike variety of the year.

1855 N-7 R1 Upright 55 PCGS graded MS64 Brown
.
Frosty steel brown and light chocolate with traces of mint red
remaining on the reverse. No spots or stains. The only marks
are a tiny, very light diagonal nick left of the ear and another
dull diagonal nick in the field well right of the inner curl. M-LDS,
die state c, with an irregular die crack from the top of the N in
UNITED to the dentils above.
Our grade is MS60.
Housed in
an old green label PCGS "rattler" holder.

Trio of 1855 N-9 R1 Italic 5's "Knob-on-Ear" Die States
.
Includes M-LDS (f early) with the knob break under the T fully
raised and the branch under the Y slightly raised VF35, LDS (f
late) with the branch of the knob under the Y fully raised VF35,
and the extremely rare TDS (g) with the narrow void between
the two parts of the knob nearly filled with additional crumbling
so it appears to be a single very large knob break. All are attrac-
tive glossy brown and chocolate. A nice progression of die
states. Lot of 3 coins.
