1849 N-11 R1 Repunched 1 EF40
. Sharpness EF45 or
slightly better but there are some light contact marks scat-
tered over both sides including a small pinprick on the jaw,
a vertical trail of tiny nicks right of stars 2 & 3, and a dull
vertical nick on the truncation over the 4. Attractive glossy
medium brown and light chocolate with mint frost covering
the protected areas on both sides. Extremely rare LDS, die
state f, with a strong rim cud break from the tip of the
wreath ribbon to the right side of the adjacent U plus two
narrow but clearly defined rim cuds under the ribbon. CC#4

brown and light chocolate. Sharply struck LDS, die state d. The
repunching inside the 4 is gone.

ered with fine granularity while the obverse is smooth and
attractive. The obverse is attractive frosty light chocolate brown
while the reverse is a similar color but relatively dull. Traces of
shallow verdigris are tucked into protected areas at TES-OF and
a few other places on the reverse. No notable contact marks.
LDS, die state c, with crumbling tucked into the bottom of the 9
and around several of the stars. Removed from an NGC slab
graded AU Details, Environmental Damage (NGC label

1849 N-19 R4 EF45
. Choice glossy medium brown and light
chocolate. Very attractive for the grade, nearly flawless. A thin
diagonal nick over the left top of the E in CENT is the only nota-
ble mark. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a, with minor sinking
but no crumbling on the reverse. A very attractive example of a
variety that's difficult to find in high grade. Tied for CC#4 hon-
ors in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance.

1849 N-20 R1 MS60
. Frosty steel brown with slightly
lighter steel brown tending toward sea-green on the
reverse. The only notable marks are a tiny nick and small
spot co-located midway between star 1 and the chin and a
pair of microscopic planchet flakes close over star 12 (as
struck). Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a late. The die lines
at the inner curl and the numerous die lines on the reverse
are visible and the fields are starting to show fine radial die
flowlines. Struck on a planchet that is clearly thicker than
normal and it is slightly heavy at 171.4 grains versus the
standard of 168.0 grains (in reality most late date large
cents come in slightly under this standard even in mint
state grades). Your cataloger has seen a few other exam-
ples of N-20 struck on a similarly thick planchet, but this is
the finest of that group. The cents of 1849 occasionally are
seen on planchets that have a beveled edge or a diameter
than is clearly larger than normal or are just overweight.
You do not find these issues on late date large cents of dif-
ferent years which suggests the planchet supplier was
experimenting with new production techniques or having
quality control problems, and that those problems were
quickly corrected.
