1845 N-12 R3 VF30
. Sharpness EF45 but cleaned and par-
tially retoned glossy reddish tan with darker steel brown and
olive toning on the highpoints. No roughness but there are
some dull, light scratches in the field under the chin. Terminal

rim cud break from under star 3 up to star 4. Fine die cracks
extend through much of the legend outside the wreath.

1845 N-13 R2 VF25
. Sharpness EF40 but covered with fine
granularity under somewhat glossy medium chocolate brown
toning. The roughness is strongest on the left half of the
obverse and the highpoints are smooth on both sides. No verdi-
gris or contact marks. Very rare LDS, die state h, with a rim cud
break from that 11.5 clockwise to star 3 and another from
ERICA to under the ribbon loop. The margins of both cud
breaks are clearly defined. Tied for CC#5 among those known
to Grellman in this die state. And it comes with a nice prove-
nance.

1845 N-15 R4+ PCGS graded MS63 Brown
. Glossy dark
chocolate brown and steel with smooth, satiny surfaces. Essen-
tially flawless except for a tiny nick on the rim above star 10.
May have been lightly cleaned and retoned long ago, but the
toning is quite attractive. LDS, die state b. The horizontal die
lines at star 13 are gone and "phantom" dentils cover the rim at
the top of the obverse.
Our grade is MS60,
tied with one
other example for finest known honors. The attribution is shown
on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value .......................................................$750-UP

Brown
. Frosty steel and light chocolate brown with hints of
light bluish steel overtones in protected areas. The surfaces
are satiny and the only mark is a faint spot of very slightly
darker reddish steel toning over star 12. Sharply struck
EDS, die state a, without any die cracks on the obverse.
The repunching on the 18 is obvious.
Our grade is
MS60+,
finest known example of this rare die state in the
Grellman census.

1846 N-1 R1 Repunched 18 AU50
. Frosty steel brown and
light chocolate with lighter steel brown and tan in protected
areas. The only notable marks are a spot of shallow carbon on
the throat and a dull nick on the left side of the L in LIBERTY.
Sharply struck MDS, die state c, with a series of fine die cracks
on both sides. The repunching on the 18 remains sharp. The
fields on both sides are hard and slightly reflective thanks to a
fresh die lapping.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP
615
1846 N-1 R1 Repunched 18 EF45
. Five points sharper but
lightly cleaned and nicely retoned frosty steel brown and choco-
late with overtones of light bluish steel on the obverse. The only
marks are two tiny pinpricks: one at the upper point of star 13
and another at the dentils over star 11, and neither is distract-
ing at all. MDS, die state c, with die cracks on both sides, includ-
ing a rather strong one from the second A in AMERICA to the
adjacent wreath stem. The repunching on the 18 remains clear.

1846 N-2 R2 Repunched 1 VF30
. Ten points sharper but
there is a small patch of verdigris under the E in CENT and a
collection of faint hairline scratches around the date and stars
12 & 13. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive, free
of any notable defects. Glossy chocolate brown. Very rare TDS,
die state f, with clearly defined rim cud breaks at TES and AM.
Tied for CC#7 of only 10 examples known in the Grellman cen-
sus. The repunching on the 1 is clear.
