1820 N-13 R1 Large Date PCGS graded MS64 Brown,
CAC APPROVED
. Attractive lustrous light steel brown with
underlying faded mint red showing through in the fields and
protected areas on both sides. The only defect is a tiny arc of
lighter golden tan toning at the dentils right of the D in UNITED.
Sharply struck MDS, the usual Randall Hoard die state. A com-
mon variety in mint state but a great date or type coin.
Our
grade is MS62.

1820 N-13 R1 Large Date MS60+
. Lustrous medium brown
and light chocolate with bluish steel overtones on the reverse. A
small swipe of reddish brown toning at the top of STAT is the
only notable mark. Sharply struck MDS, the usual Randall Hoard
die state for this variety.
Estimated Value .......................................................$500-UP

1820 N-13 R1 Large Date AU55
. Tapered Planchet Error.
Frosty steel brown and light chocolate with lustrous lighter steel
brown and tan toning faded down from mint color in protected
areas. The only marks are subtle puffs of darker chocolate
brown toning on the lower left part of the obverse and a thin
diagonal nick on the cheek right of the nostril. LDS. Struck on a
defective planchet that is considerably thinner than normal on
the left side causing severe weakness at stars 1-4 and on the
opposing TED-STAT. This planchet most likely was cut from near
the end of a planchet strip. Weight 156.1 grains versus the
168.0-grain standard. A neat mint error.
Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP

1821 N-1 R1 PCGS graded XF45
. Very attractive glossy light
to medium chocolate brown with lighter frosty steel brown and
tan toning in protected areas. No spots, stains, or notable con-
tact marks. The only defects are a patch of microscopic porosity
right of the D in UNITED. EDS but not quite the earliest state.
There are no die cracks on either side but there is a bit of crum-
bling at the dentil roots above and slightly to the left of star 7. A
very attractive example of a date that is difficult to find in higher
grades.
Our grade is VF30.

1822 N-6 R3 AU58
. Very attractive lustrous steel brown
and light chocolate with delicate overtones of light bluish
steel in protected areas. Traces of reddish tan faded down
from mint color can be found on the reverse. The only
marks are a ring of tiny ticks around ONE CENT, and they
are not distracting. Sharply struck EDS with smooth, slightly
prooflike fields on both sides. The reflectivity is strongest
on the obverse and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal
in spite of the tiny marks.

1823 N-2 R2 PCGS graded VF30
. Frosty steel brown and
medium chocolate. An attractive cent with smooth surfaces and
no significant marks. A few tiny nicks over the right point of star
13 and a thin diagonal nick on the front edge of the neck are
good identifying marks, but they are not at all distracting. Nicely
struck E-MDS with a strong rim cud break from star 4 to star 5
and another above star 6. A very acceptable example of a date
that is difficult to find in higher grades.
Our grade is VF20+,
close to VF25.
The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.
