1804 S-266b R5 F15
. Sharpness close to VF20 but there
is extremely faint roughness hidden under the mostly
glossy medium chocolate and light olive brown toning. No
verdigris, and the only marks are an area of slightly darker
chocolate brown toning in the field before the neck and a
long diagonal nick in the field off the chin. Nice eye appeal
in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Rare M-LDS, Breen state
III, with a cud break at RTY but no cud at MERIC. Only a
few higher-grade examples are known in this rare interme-
diate die state.

1804 S-266c R2 VG8
. Glossy light chocolate brown and steel.
No roughness or verdigris and only a few minor marks. The
most notable mark is a small planchet fissure on the rim left of
the L in LIBERTY and this void extends through to the rim at TE
in UNITED. The other notable marks are a rim nick left of the
first S in STATES and a pinprick near the dentils left of the lower
curls. LDS, Breen state IV, with strong cud breaks at RTY and
MERIC. A nice example of this tough date.
Estimated Value .................................................... $2,000-UP

1804 S-266b R5 ANACS graded VG Details, Cleaned
.
Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel with slightly lighter
highpoints from a delicate cleaning. The surfaces are smooth
except for traces of very light roughness at the top of the
reverse. A dent in the center of the obverse created a minor
bulge in the center of the reverse causing extra wear on EN in
CENT. The date and legends are complete and easily readable
although a couple letters are weak. Rare M-LDS, Breen state
III, with a cud break at RTY but no cud at MERIC.
Our grade
is VG7 sharpness net G5.
A decent low-grade 1804 cent in
spite of the minor dent. The attribution is shown on the ANACS
label.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,500-UP

1804 S-266b R5 PCGS Genuine, Good Details, Environ-
mental Damage
. Slightly glossy mix of chocolate and steel
brown mixed with tan from a light cleaning. Uniform fine rough-
ness covers the planchet but there are no marks or verdigris.
The date is weak but easily readable. Most of the legends
remain visible but a few letters are weak. Rare M-LDS, Breen
state III, with a cud break at RTY but no cud at MERIC.
Our
grade is G4 sharpness net AG3.
Estimated Value .......................................................$500-UP

1805 S-267 R1 VF20+
. Choice glossy light chocolate brown
and steel. A beautiful cent, nearly flawless. A tiny rim nick over
the left top of the T in LIBERTY and a barely visible rim nick left
of that L are the best identifying marks, and they are trivial.
Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks at the
throat. Close to VF25.
Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP
