1798 S-174 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VG7
. Sharpness near
VF20 where the details were properly struck up, but the obverse
is covered with myriad light scratches, all blended into the natu-
ral toning. The major flaw on this cent is the uneven strike. The
bottom part of the obverse and opposing upper part of the
reverse were poorly struck due to axial die misalignment (the
die faces were not parallel). As a result the date is faint with
only the 98 partially visible, and most of STATES is gone as well.
Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter chocolate
toning on the highpoints. LDS, Breen state V. The die clash-
marks are strong and the lower half of the numerator is very
thin. An interesting piece in spite of the obverse scratches.

1798 S-179 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VF20
. Variety with E
over Inverted E in AMERICA. Rather glossy medium chocolate
brown and steel mixed with hints of reddish chocolate brown
toning on the reverse. No corrosion, only minor contact marks
consistent with the grade. The notable marks are a light rim
bruise under the 1 in the denominator and an old pin scratch at
the dentil tips over TED in UNITED. EDS, Breen state I. The
date and legends are strong and the E over Inverted E feature
is obvious.
Removed from a PCGS slab graded VF30
(PCGS
label #1434.30/22027917 included).
Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP

1798 S-181 R3 Small 8, Style II Hair VF20
. Glossy dark
olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning covering
the devices. Smooth and attractive, just minor contact marks of
no consequence. A tiny diagonal nick on the upright of the E in
LIBERTY is the best identifying mark, and it is barely visible. M-
LDS, Breen state III late, with die cracks at the bust tip creating
a very slightly raised retained cud. The "Large 0's over Small 0's
feature in the denominator is clear.
Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP

1798 S-184 R1 Style II Hair with Small 8 VF20
. Sharp-
ness EF40 or a bit better but there are numerous light rim
bruises on both sides, none notable but too many to ignore.
The only other marks are a collection of dull pinpricks on the
neck. Glossy steel and light olive brown. MDS.
Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP

1798 S-186 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VG7
. Glossy choco-
late brown and steel with lighter brown toning in protected
areas. The surfaces are smooth and attractive. The only marks
are a pair of minor rim bruises opposite the mouth and a rim
dent left of the fraction. The date and legends are complete and
clear. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with a cud break that involves
both 0's in the denominator. The die crack arcing from that cud
to ME in AMERICA is strong.
Estimated Value .........................................................$80-UP

1799 S-189 R2 Fair-2
. The obverse is marginally better while
the reverse is weaker. Both sides are covered with tiny nicks
mixed with traces of microscopic roughness, but there is no ver-
digris. Fortunately the date is relatively strong, especially the
second 9 which is nearly complete. Slightly glossy chocolate
brown and steel.
Estimated Value .......................................................$800-UP

1799 S-189 R2 Fair-2
. Slightly sharper but there are numer-
ous light contact marks on both sides, including several old
scratches on the obverse and a half dozen small rim bumps,
strongest on the right side of the reverse. Glossy chocolate
brown with no trace of corrosion or verdigris. The date is worn
into the rim so only the upper half is clear, and there is an nick
on the bottom of the second 9, but it is a 1799.
Estimated Value .......................................................$500-UP
