1796 S-83 R4 Liberty Cap VG8
. Nice glossy dark chocolate
brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning covering the
devices. The obverse is a couple points sharper than the
reverse, as usual on these Liberty Cap varieties. A glass reveals
extremely faint roughness well hidden under the glossy toning,
but the eye appeal remains quite nice. No verdigris. The only
mark is a light scratch in the field under the cap. MDS, Breen
state II, with a die crack through ERTY. The date is bold and the
legends are easily readable, although a few letters on the
reverse are weak.

1796 S-85 R5- Liberty Cap VG7
. Sharpness F12 but slightly
rough in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris but there is
a vertical scratch touching the back of the head and another
one on the bust extending into the field before the neck. Glossy
chocolate brown, lighter on the devices and darker in the pro-
tected areas. EDS, Breen state I, before die lapping weakened
the devices on the reverse. The date and legends are complete
and easily readable except for weakness at ES-OF-AM due to an
uneven strike on the reverse.

1796 S-86 R5 Liberty Cap VG7
. Several points sharper on
the obverse, slightly weaker on the reverse (as usual). The sur-
faces are decent but there are traces of microscopic roughness
on both sides and a shallow pit on the throat. The notable con-
tact marks are a few short scratches in the field before the chin
and neck plus a rim bruise over AT in STATES. Mostly glossy
medium chocolate brown and steel. The date is clear and the
legends are complete except for weakness at UNITED and
CENT. MDS, Breen state I, before crumbling forms close before
the lips.

1796 S-87 R3 Liberty Cap VG10
. Sharpness F12 or slightly
better but there is extremely fine roughness in the fields and
protected areas while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris.
Just a few minor contact marks, including a sharp rim nick left
of the lower curls and a fine vertical scratch up from the T in
CENT. Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel
brown toning on the highpoints. The date is strong and the leg-
ends are clear. Not perfect but still nice for the grade.

1796 S-88 R4 Liberty Cap NGC VG Details, Environmen-
tal Damage
. The obverse is dull dark steel brown and choco-
late while the reverse is a much lighter shade of sandy tan
mixed with chocolate brown highpoints (possibly from a light
cleaning on that side). The surfaces are covered with very fine
roughness but the only sign of verdigris is a small spot between
the nostril and upper lip. Both sides show a few light scuff
marks, none significant. The date and legends are complete but
the dull surfaces hurt the eye appeal. I suspect a good brushing
would help a lot.
Our grade is F12 sharpness net G5.
