1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. G4
. Rather glossy steel brown
and chocolate. Microscopic roughness covers the fields and pro-
tected areas while the highpoints are smooth. No verdigris or
contact marks. The obverse is weaker than the reverse, as
usual for Chain Cents. The date is very faint, essentially gone,
but most of LIBERTY is easily readable and the legends on the
reverse are complete, although CENT and OF AMERI are weak.
MDS with swelling at the top of the U in UNITED. Decent for a
low grade Chain AMERI.

1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. PCGS graded Fair-2
. Glossy
medium chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning
on the highpoints. No roughness, verdigris, or planchet defects,
just heavily worn. The only marks are some trivial nicks, mostly
on the rims. A rim nick just right of the Y in LIBERTY is the best
identifying mark, and it is insignificant otherwise. The date is
very faint but all 4 digits can be seen if you angle the coin just
right in a good light. Most of LIBERTY is visible. The devices and
legends on the reverse are weak as well, but AMERI and the
period that follows can be made out. The chain is complete.
Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade.
If there can
be such a thing as a choice Fair-2 Chain AMERI., this is it.

1793 S-1 R4 Chain AMERI. Basal State-1
. Glossy
medium chocolate brown and steel. No roughness, essen-
tially just heavily worn except for a script "G" that is neatly
engraved into the center of the obverse. Otherwise there
are just a few small, shallow planchet voids on the reverse
and a few minor contact marks on both sides. LIBER
remains visible and the portrait is mostly visible although
faint. At least half of the chain remains visible and STATES
is complete, which is fortunate since that's where a strong
cud break connects TAT to the rim. An extremely rare ter-
minal die state, Breen state VI, for our first large cent. The
failure of this reverse die resulted in the introduction of the
Chain AMERICA style reverse for all the Chain Cents that
followed.

1793 S-2 R4+ Chain AMERICA Fair-2
. Very slightly glossy
chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are covered with fine
granularity but there is no verdigris. The only marks are a few
very shallow pits along the rim behind the portrait. The date is
faint but readable when the coin is tilted just right in the light.
LIBERTY and most of the legend on the reverse are weak but
readable. The chain, ONE CENT, and the fraction are more eas-
ily readable, which is normal for the wear pattern on Chain
Cents.

1793 S-4 R3 Chain AMERICA with Periods AG3
. Slightly
sharper but covered with fine to moderate roughness on all but
the highpoints, which are smooth. No verdigris, and the only
mark is a small pit or nick close over the 7 in the date. Slightly
glossy chocolate brown. The date and legends are weak but
everything remains readable. The period following LIBERTY is
present but the one following the date is gone.

1793 S-4 R3 Chain AMERICA with Periods Basal State-1
.
Well worn and covered with fine roughness under slightly glossy
dark chocolate brown toning. The highpoints are a lighter shade
of chocolate. No verdigris, and the only mark is a light rim
bruise at K-9 on the reverse. The date is gone but LIBERTY and
most of the chain remain visible. A decent hole-filler for the
budget-minded collector.
