1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 PCGS graded VF20
.
Chocolate brown and steel blending to olive brown in protected
areas while the highpoints are a lighter shade of steel brown.
The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye but a glass
reveals uniform extremely faint granularity. No verdigris and the
only mark is a small planchet chip at the base of the F in OF.
EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any visible die cracks at RTY. The
date is strong and the overdate is obvious. The legends are
complete and clear.
Our grade is VF20 sharpness net F12+,
close to F15.
The overdate feature is noted on the PCGS label.

1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 VG10
. Mostly glossy
steel brown and chocolate with darker olive brown toning in
protected areas. The surfaces are not perfectly smooth but they
offer nice eye appeal for the grade. The only notable defects are
a shallow, very dull contact mark on the throat and a tiny rim
bruise under the 20 in the denominator. E-MDS, Manley state
2.0, with a fine die crack through the top of ERTY. The date and
legends are complete and clear and the overdate feature is
obvious.

1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7 VG10
. A couple points
sharper with a few dozen dull pinprick marks on the obverse,
mostly on the portrait and hidden in the hair. Otherwise this
piece is choice and the eye appeal is excellent. Glossy medium
chocolate fading to olive brown in protected areas. The devices
are a lighter shade of steel brown. MDS, Manley state 3.0 late.
There is a cud break connecting TY to the rim and a rather
strong crack through the tops of BERTY with an extension up to
the dentils from the top of the B. The date and legends are
strong and the overdate is clear.

1808 C-3 R1 PCGS graded VF35
. Chatter Strike Obverse.
Frosty olive brown and steel with smooth, very attractive sur-
faces. Flowline luster shows in the fields and protected areas on
both sides. No roughness or verdigris, and the only marks are a
few trivial ticks at the top of the wreath. LDS, Manley state 5.0.
The die cracks through the I in UNITED and in the wreath left of
C in CENT are clear. In addition a sharp but narrow double pro-
file shows from the tip of the nose down to the bottom of the
neck with stronger doubling visible on the hair ribbons. The
doubling may be from a second strike or, more likely, from die
bounce (chatter strike). There is no trace of doubling on the
reverse. The strike was very slightly off center to K-6 but all the
devices remain on the planchet.
Our grade is VF25 choice.
Comes with a nice provenance.
