1803 C-1 R1 PCGS graded AU55
. Frosty steel brown and
chocolate with lustrous golden steel brown toning covering the
protected areas. Great eye appeal with just a touch of rub on
the highest points of the devices. The only marks are a spot of
slightly darker chocolate brown toning over AL in HALF, a faint
vertical scratch in this spot, and a collection of microscopic pin-
pricks over the N in CENT. None of these marks is distracting.
LDS, Manley state 3.0. All the die cracks described by Manley
are clearly visible on the reverse and there is a small but clearly
defined rim cud over the M in AMERICA that is not mentioned in
the Manley reference.
Our grade is AU50.
Estimated Value .................................................... $2,000-UP

1803 C-1 R1 EF45
. Beautiful frosty steel brown with lustrous
golden light brown and tan faded down from mint color in pro-
tected areas. Essentially flawless showing only very light friction
on the highpoints of the devices. A microscopic pinprick under
the B in LIBERTY can help identify this piece, but it takes a
strong glass to see it. LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die crack that
arcs across the upper part of the reverse is clear and an addi-
tional crack from the rim over the M in AMERICA reaches
through the tops of the adjacent E & R.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP

The swelling at the 18 is strong and the radial die crack from
the top of the hair ribbon to the rim is clear.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP

.

1803 C-4 R4 PCGS graded VF35
. Frosty steel brown and
medium chocolate with traces of frosty luster in protected areas
on the reverse. A small splash of darker chocolate toning at BE
in LIBERTY contains traces of extremely fine roughness but the
remainder of the planchet is smooth. A collection of tiny nicks at
HALF into the wreath is the only other defect. MDS with the
reverse rotated 10 degrees CW (the reverse on this variety is
often upset with a nearly 180 degree rotation from the normal
head-to-foot die orientation).
Our grade is VF35 net VF30.

1804 C-2 R6 AG3
. Off-Center Tab Strike. Slightly sharper,
especially on the reverse, but there is an area of roughness
left of the hair ribbon. No verdigris and only minor contact
marks, including several tiny pinpricks in the field above the
bust. Recolored a mostly glossy chocolate brown with blu-
ish steel overtones. The date is weak but easily readable
and the legends are complete except for the I in UNITED,
which is gone (the left edge of the reverse is always weakly
struck on this variety). This piece appears to have been
struck normally and then struck a second time way off cen-
ter creating a tab on the rim left of the lower curls. The die
struck the obverse rim while the opposing reverse rim was
pressed into a new planchet. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0 late.
There is a die crack through the top of IBERTY to the rim
over the Y, and the area over TY is just starting to sink. The
reverse is rotated 20 degrees CW, which is typical for the
variety. About 25 examples are known of this very rare vari-
ety, and most of those are in low grade.
Estimated Value .............................................. $6,000-UP
