. Small Edge Letters. Sharpness F15
or a bit better but there are two vertical scrapes on the
mouth and an arc of impressed dentils on the bust fading
into the field over the date. These marks are old and blend
perfectly into the natural toning. Otherwise the surfaces are
smooth and the eye appeal is excellent. Attractive glossy
medium brown blending to very light chocolate brown in
protected areas. The date, legends, and Small Edge Letters
are all clear. EDS, Manley state 1.0, showing no trace of a
bulge at the top of the wreath. The reverse is rotated 20
degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orien-
tation. A condition census example of this very rare variety.
Graded VF20 by Stack's when they sold it as part of the
Schonwalter collection (1/21/2003:1085).
Estimated Value ...............................................$7,500-UP

. Small Edge Letters. Sharpness VF20,
perhaps a bit better, but cleaned and retoned glossy light choc-
olate brown with hints of lighter pinkish steel brown toning on
the highpoints. No roughness, only a few minor contact marks.
The only notable mark is a light scratch arcing across the lower
half of the neck. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0, with strong die clash-
marks around the portrait. A decent piece that should improve
as the retoning progresses.

1794 C-2a R2+ VG8
. Small Edge Letters. Sharpness VF20,
even better on the obverse, but the planchet is covered with
very fine roughness, strongest on the lower left quadrant of the
reverse. No marks or verdigris. The date and legends are com-
plete and easily readable except for weakness caused by corro-
sion at the fraction and NIT in UNITED. Slightly glossy dark
steel with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. Rare EDS,
Manley state 1.0, with no die clashmarks.

1794 C-3a R5 G6
. Small Edge Letters. Slightly sharper with
too many small contact marks for the sharpness grade. The
only significant contact marks are a dull nick on the wreath rib-
bon left of the denominator and another near the rim over ER in
AMERICA. There is no corrosion or verdigris. Mostly glossy
chocolate brown. The date is strong and the legends are com-
plete and easily readable, although RICA is weak due to an
uneven strike on the reverse. A decent lower-grade example of
this tough die variety.
Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP

1794 C-4a R3 NGC graded G4
. Small Edge Letters. Glossy
medium brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown ton-
ing in the protected areas. Microscopic roughness covers the
protected areas while the devices are smooth. No marks or ver-
digris. LDS, Manley state 4.0, with strong swelling in the field
under the cap nearly to the date. The date is clear and the leg-
ends are complete although some elements are weak.
Our
grade is consistent with the slab grade, and the obverse
is close to G5.
Estimated Value .......................................................$300-UP
