. Large Edge Letters. A couple points
sharper but fine to moderate granularity covers the fields
and protected areas on both sides while the devices are
smooth. No verdigris, but there is a dull dent at AM that has
caused a subtle bulge in the field over the end of the pole.
Recolored a partially glossy dark bluish steel and olive
brown. LDS, Manley state 2.0, with a die clashmark nestled
between the upper edge of the cap and the back of the
head. The date is clear and the legends are easily readable
in spite of the fine roughness. The Large Edge Letters are
strong except for the T in TWO and the E in HUNDRED,
which are weakened by edge bumps. One of the rarest
varieties of the series, very close to Rarity-7, and sure to
command attention from advanced collectors of half cents.

1794 C-9 R2 High Relief Head PCGS graded AU55
.
Small Edge Letters. Attractive glossy medium brown and
light chocolate offering excellent eye appeal. No roughness
or verdigris, and the only notable marks are a very tiny chip
on the jaw, two more in the field between the chin and
bust, and a small nick at the dentil tips right of the date.
Sharply struck LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die crack from
the rim through the cap is strong and several dentils left of
the fraction are fused by crumbling. The obverse is nicely
centered on the defect-free planchet but the reverse is very
slightly off center to the bottom leaving shorter dentils
under the fraction. A beautiful example of the "High Relief
Head" type.
Our grade is EF40+.

1794 C-9 R2 High Relief Head F12+
. Small Edge Letters.
Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter
steel brown toning on the highpoints. No corrosion or verdigris,
but there is some soft dirt in protected areas. The sharpness is
F15 or slightly better but there are a few marks on the reverse.
The notable defects are a thin planchet void from over the C in
CENT to the right foot of the I in UNITED and a shallow void on
the rim between the D in UNITED and the adjacent S in STATES
(both as struck but they do catch your eye), plus a rim bruise at
the I in AMERICA. The obverse is choice. LDS, Manley state 3.0,
with a dull but clear die crack from the rim through the cap to
the hair where it fades away. The date and legends are com-
plete and clear.

1795 C-1 R2 Lettered Edge AG3+
. Close to G4 but the plan-
chet is covered with microscopic roughness. No verdigris or
notable marks. Somewhat glossy olive brown and steel with
slightly lighter toning on the devices. The date is weak but
readable and the legends are complete except for weakness on
HALF CENT. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any die swelling at
AME. The planchet appears very slightly egg-shaped thanks to
an incipient planchet clip before the lower half of the neck, as
struck.

1795 C-2a/b R7+ Punctuated Date on a Thin Plan-
chet with Lettered Edge AG3
. A few points sharper but
covered with light to moderate corrosion on all but the
highpoints, which are smooth. No marks or verdigris. The
date and legends are weak but readable although some let-
ters and devices are distorted by the corrosion. Slightly
glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning
on the highpoints of the reverse. The edge lettering is par-
tially visible but obvious and some of the letters hang off
the planchet because they are taller than the planchet is
thick. Weight 89.2 grains versus the thick-planchet stan-
dard of 104.0 grains. Manley lists 3 examples of the 95C2a
known on a thin planchet with edge lettering. We know the
transition from thick 104.0-grain lettered edge planchets
occurred during production of this variety. Obviously a few
of the thin planchets got misdirected to the Castaing
machine and had edge letters added to them, and we know
of at least one thick planchet 95C2 that escaped the mint
without having the edge lettering applied (see page 49 in
the Manley reference). Weight 89.2 grains. Comes with a
nice provenance.
