1788 Connecticut Miller 16.4-L.2 Rarity-5+ VG10
.
Draped Bust Left. Off Center. Glossy medium chocolate brown
and steel blending to darker chocolate and olive brown in pro-
tected areas. No corrosion or verdigris, and the only marks are
a few shallow planchet chips on the rim behind the seated fig-
ure on the reverse. Very late die state, the latest seen, with a
massive die crack across the reverse plus an additional crack
arcing down through the shield to the rim. A much later die
state than seen in the Perkins or Ford collections. These dies
were worn out. Struck slightly off center to K-4 leaving the date
and parts of the legends off the planchet. The dies were in
medal alignment, head-to-head rather than the normal head-to-
foot orientation. Listed on page 62 in the "Redbook." Weight
116.2 grains.

1787 Machin's Mills Vlack 21-I-87D-I Rarity-6- VF35
.
Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter chocolate
brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are reasonably
smooth but not perfectly so showing microscopic roughness on
all but the highest points of the devices. No verdigris. The only
marks are a small planchet void near the rim at K-2 on the
obverse and another in the hair at the top of the head (both as
struck) and a short scratch between the N & I in NIA on the
right side of the reverse. Struck from dies that were in their lat-
est state. Both dies were heavily lapped causing significant
weakness in the date and legends, and there is clear swelling in
the field before the portrait. The die state makes grading a chal-
lenge, and even top grade examples show similar details.
Weight 118.7 grains. Listed on page 67 in the "Redbook."

1786 New Jersey with Wide Shield and Curved Beam
Maris 21-N Rarity-3 VF20
. Attractive glossy medium choco-
late brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. The sur-
faces are mostly smooth but there are traces of minor
roughness in a few of the protected areas, mostly at REA in
CAESAREA. The only notable mark is a speck of greenish verdi-
gris in the field under the front edge of the chest of the horse.
The date and legends are complete and strong. Weight 155.9
grains. Listed on page 69 in the "Redbook."
Estimated Value .......................................................$350-UP

1787 New Jersey Maris with Medium Shield and Curved
Beam 43-d Rarity-1 VG10
. Sharpness VF20 but covered with
uniform extremely fine roughness that dulls the gloss. Slightly
glossy dark steel and chocolate. No verdigris. The only marks
are some faint hairline scratches that are well-hidden in the
patina. The date is weak but readable and the legends are clear
except for weakness at the top of NOVA. Weight 141.6 grains.
Listed on page 70 in the "Redbook."
Estimated Value .........................................................$60-UP

1787 New Jersey Maris 55-m Rarity-4 U over S Variety
F15
. Sharpness VF20 but covered with fine granularity under
rather glossy chocolate brown toning with lighter brown toning
on the devices. No notable verdigris or contact marks. The bot-
tom edge of the date is off the planchet but it remains easily
readable and the legends are clear. The second U over S feature
in PLURIBUS is obvious. A decent example of this popular "Red-
book" variety. Weight 130.7 grains. Listed on page 69 in the
"Redbook."

1787 New Jersey Maris 63-q Rarity-3 F12
. A Large Plan-
chet with Sprig Above Plow variety. Beautiful glossy light to
medium chocolate brown with smooth surfaces. Nicely struck
on a flawless planchet. Looks perfect to the unaided eye but a
glass reveals a few very light scratches on the horse's head, all
blended perfectly into the attractive toning. Weight 132.8
grains. Listed on page 70 in the "Redbook."

Very attractive glossy light chocolate brown blending to darker
chocolate brown in protected areas. Looks smooth and choice
to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals extremely fine granular-
ity in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris, marks, or
planchet flaws. A superior example of this variety in terms of
color and surface as most come with significant roughness. The
date is clear and the legends are strong. Listed on page 72 in
the "Redbook." Weight 110.7 grains.
