roded (our grade VG7 sharpness net AG3 for light to moderate

1794 S-38 R5 F12
. Sharpness VF20 but there are a dozen
small pits on the obverse, none distracting but too many to
ignore. The notable ones are in the field off the tip of the nose.
No verdigris and the notable contact marks are a fine vertical
scratch on the neck, a nick on the top of the I in LIBERTY, and a
pinprick on the E in STATES. Glossy light olive brown mixed with
reddish chocolate. EDS, Breen state II. The two chips in the
field under the cap are strong and the reverse is rotated 10
degrees CCW. The date is clear and the legends are strong. A
decent example of this tough die variety, one of the popular
"Single Berry Left of Bow" types.
Estimated Value .................................................... $2,500-UP
252
1794 S-42 R4 F15
. Ten points sharper but there are numer-
ous small rim nicks and minor rim bruises on both sides. The
notable marks are a rim bruise at the end of the pole, a shallow
planchet flake under the bust tip, and a dull rim nick over the E
in LIBERTY. No corrosion or verdigris, and the toning is an
attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. LDS, Breen
state II, with light die clashmarks at the back of the head. The
date and legends are complete and clear.
Estimated Value .......................................................$800-UP
253
1794 S-43 R2 NGC graded VF25
. Glossy medium chocolate
brown and darker olive with lighter steel brown toning on the
devices. No corrosion or verdigris, but there is a small planchet
chip in the field before the eye. There are several old, light
scratches on both sides, and the only one of those that is visible
to the unaided eye is a diagonal scratch through the N in
UNITED. The only other notable mark is a rim bruise right of the
Y in LIBERTY. MDS, Breen state IV early. The die crack through
the U is bold and the reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW. The
reverse is slightly misaligned to K-4 causing strike weakness at
ERICA but everything else is strong.
Our grade is F12+
sharpness net VG10.
The attribution and Conour provenance
are shown on the NGC label.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP

R3 SEGS graded G4 Details/Heavy Corrosion (our grade AG3
sharpness net Basal State-1). Both have a clear date and the
attribution is shown on the SEGS slab label. Lot of 2 coins.

1794 S-47

1794 S-47 R4 VF25
. Sharper by at least 5 points with
smooth, very attractive surfaces, but there are a few light
contact marks. The notable ones are a light rim bruise
under the lowest curl, some tiny ticks in the field before the
portrait, and a collection of faint pin scratches in the hair
left of the earlobe. In addition there is a very shallow low
spot at the dentil tips off the tip of the lowest curl and a
similar low spot at the dentil tips above the I in LIBERTY,
most likely a result of some debris on the die. The reverse
is essentially flawless. Choice glossy light chocolate brown
with excellent eye appeal. LDS, Breen state III, with all the
fine die cracks on the reverse described by Breen. In addi-
tion there is a double profile on the forehead, nose, and lips
of Ms Liberty plus similar doubling on LI in LIBERTY and the
179 in the date. Breen says the doubling at LI is from
repunching in the die but he does not mention the similar
doubling seen elsewhere on this cent. The reverse is not
rotated as often seen on this variety. Certainly a high condi-
tion census example of this tough variety. The finest is an
EF45 example impounded in the ANS, and the next best
grades VF30. A great opportunity for a serious collector of
1794 cents.
Estimated Value ............................................ $10,000-UP
