1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap G6
. Sharpness VG8 but faint
granularity covers the fields and protected areas on the obverse
while the reverse shows light corrosion mixed with several shal-
low pits. Specks of greenish verdigris can be found in may of
the pits. The only obvious mark is a rim dent opposite the tip of
the nose. EDS, Breen state I. The reverse is upset (dies oriented
head-to-head) as often seen on this rare variety. Slightly glossy
reddish chocolate brown and steel with lighter steel brown ton-
ing on the devices. The date and legends are complete and eas-
ily readable.

1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap F12
. Clipped Planchet. Sharpness
near VF20 but there is a small patch of shallow corrosion at ER
in LIBERTY and a larger one from the top of the O in ONE into
the leaves above. There are traces of additional microscopic
roughness on both sides but overall the remainder of the plan-
chet is smooth and attractive. The only notable contact mark is
a light rim bruise before the neck. Mostly glossy light to medium
chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices.
MDS, Breen state IV, with two horizontal die waves in the field
before the portrait and one more in the field behind the lower
curls. The date and legends are complete and strong. A curved
planchet clip reaches inside the dentils left of the date and at
STA.

1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap VG10+
. A point or two sharper
but there are a few too many minor marks for the higher grade.
No corrosion or verdigris. Most of the marks are tiny pre-striking
planchet chips that didn't completely disappear when the plan-
chet was struck. This was a result of the very late state of the
obverse die where die swelling and cracks weakened the strike
left of the lowest curls, and that resulted in weakness on the
opposing legend at D-STA. Otherwise the only notable marks
are an arcing scratch through the N in UNITED and a shallow
planchet flake at the top of that E (as struck). Attractive glossy
chocolate brown and steel. LDS, Breen state VII, with horizontal
die cracks in the field before the portrait and obvious swelling
on both sides of the portrait. The date is bold and the legends
are strong except for weakness at D-STA as previously men-
tioned. A decent example of a neat die state.

defects. Includes S-81 R3, S-84 R3, S-85 R5-, S-87 R3 (4), and
S-89 R3, plus 3 examples that are not attributed due to a heav-
ily worn reverse. All have a readable date but some dates are
weak or partial. Lot of 11 coins.

1796 S-93 R3 Draped Bust VG8
. A couple points sharper,
especially on the reverse, but the planchet is covered with
microscopic porosity. No verdigris, and the only notable marks
are some barely visible hairline scratches hidden in the toning
on the portrait and a tiny nick near the rim under the bust tip.
Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel
brown and chocolate highpoints. E-MDS, Breen state I, before
any die cracks. The date and legends are complete and clear.
