1796 S-94 R5+ Draped Bust G5
. Sharpness near VF30 but
covered with uniform fine to moderate roughness. No verdigris
and the only notable mark is a rim nick over the N in UNITED.
Dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the
highpoints. The date and legends are complete and easily read-
able in spite of the roughness. EDS.

1796 S-96 R6 Draped Bust PCGS Genuine, G Details,
Surface Damage
. Sharpness G5 but the edge has been lightly
tapped all around creating a high rim that impinges on the date
and some of the letters in the legend. No notable marks. The
surfaces are decent but a glass reveals uniform extremely faint
roughness covering both sides. Slightly glossy medium to dark
chocolate brown and steel with a narrow arc of lighter brown
toning on the left side of the reverse. The date is easily read-
able in spite of the raised rim and the legends are mostly clear
(although HALF CENT is faint at best). LDS, Breen state II, with
a die crack bisecting the reverse from the T in UNITED to the M
in AMERICA.
Our grade is G5 sharpness net AG3.
One of
the rarest varieties of the year, and the finest known grades
only F12. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.

1796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust G5
. The obverse is a bit weaker
but the reverse is considerably stronger with complete, clear
legends. The devices are smooth but microscopic granularity
covers the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and only a
few insignificant marks. A dull nick on the leaf over the O in
ONE is the best identifying mark. The lower third of the date is
worn into the rim but everything else is clear. Slightly glossy
dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown and choco-
late toning on the devices. EDS, Breen state I, before any die
cracks on the obverse.
Estimated Value .......................................................$200-UP

1796 S-99 R5 Draped Bust G6
. The obverse is sharper but
the reverse is weaker due to uniform fine to moderate corro-
sion, the assigned grade an average of the two. No verdigris or
contact marks. The only "defect" is a knife rim over MERI, as
struck. Rather glossy light to medium chocolate brown blending
to darker chocolate in protected areas. EDS, Breen state I,
before any die cracks on the obverse. The date is complete and
clear and the legends are readable.
Estimated Value .......................................................$500-UP

1796 S-100 R5 Draped Bust AG3
. Slightly sharper on the
lower half of the obverse and upper half of the reverse where
the designs were more strongly impressed into the planchet
(thanks to the die faces being out of perfect horizontal align-
ment). The date is complete and clear. The only marks are faint
hairline scratches that cover both sides, but these are not dis-
tracting and the eye appeal is quite nice for the grade. Mostly
glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning
covering the devices. The two-tone contrast accents the designs
and enhances the eye appeal on this well-worn cent. EDS,
Breen state I, before any clashmarks.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1796 S-103 R4+ LIHERTY Obverse VG8
. Sharpness near
VF20 but covered with uniform fine to moderate granularity on
all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No marks or verdigris.
Dark steel and olive brown with glossy lighter chocolate and
steel brown toning on the highpoints. The bottom edge of the
date is a bit weak due to an uneven strike on that side but the
rest is clear and the legends are complete. The LIHERTY error is
bold, the B over inverted B feature being obvious to the unaided
eye. A decent example of the rarer version of this popular "Red-
book" error.
