1797 S-130 R2 VF30
. Sharpness VF35 or slightly better but
there are some light contact marks on the rims on both sides,
none significant but too many to ignore at this sharpness level.
The notable ones are an irregular rim nick under the left base of
the 1 in the date, a light rim bruise over the R in AMERICA, and
a tiny rim bruise just right of the fraction. Glossy chocolate
brown and steel. LDS, Breen state V. The internal cud break
behind the head is strong and a fine vertical crack reaches from
the dentils off the bust tip to the dentils right of the Y. Noyes
graded EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#15, his photo #56587.
Removed from an NGC slab graded AU53
(NGC label
#508671-001 included, and it shows the attribution and Ras-
mussen provenance).

1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath VG10
. A couple
points sharper, perhaps even better on the obverse, but
there are a few light contact marks on the obverse. The
notable ones are some very fine hairline scratches across
the date, a few more in the field left of the lower curls, and
a rim nick left of the lower end of the hair ribbon. Only the
rim nick is visible without the aid of a glass and the eye
appeal of this cent is quite nice for the grade. Glossy light
to medium chocolate brown with a few splashes of slightly
darker olive brown toning on the lower half of the obverse.
LDS, Breen state IV late, with a clear radial die crack from
the rim over the bust tip to the neck near the bust. Struck
on a planchet that shows partial diagonal reeding, Breen's
planchet type V. A very nice example of a tough die variety.
Graded F12 net VG10 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes cen-
sus, his photo #28067.

1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath G5
. Sharpness VF20 but
very fine porosity covers the planchet with patches of more sig-
nificant roughness on the right side of the obverse and bottom
of the reverse. No verdigris or significant contact marks.
Medium brown and light chocolate with darker chocolate brown
toning in protected areas. The date and legends are complete
and clear. MDS showing clear die clashmarks on the obverse but
no cracks.

1797 S-137 R2 PCGS graded VF25
. Choice glossy medium
chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are smooth and this
cent offers outstanding eye appeal. No spots, stains, or rough-
ness. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a faint hairline
scratch from the nose into the field at right where it fades away,
and another from the ear to the throat. M-LDS, Breen state VII.
There is a clear die crack through CA and the ribbon end to the
dentils below plus swelling at RICA and UN. The date is bold
and the legends are complete.
Our grade is F15+, close to
VF20.

1797 S-139 R1 F15
. Ten points sharper but cleaned and
retoned glossy reddish chocolate brown and dark steel. The
obverse is perfectly smooth but extremely faint granularity cov-
ers most of the reverse, strongest at the F in OF and just left of
the fraction. A dull rim nick opposite the chin is the only signifi-
cant contact mark. LDS, Breen state V. The die cracks at the
lower curls are strong and the swelling between the cracks is
advanced. The date and legends are all bold.
