1798 S-161 R2 Small 8, Style I Hair VF25
. Glossy medium
steel brown and light chocolate with traces of lighter brown ton-
ing in protected areas. No roughness or verdigris, only light
contact marks. The only notable marks are a very light rim
bruise under the lowest curl and a dull rim nick at IC in AMER-
ICA, and neither mark is distracting. M-LDS, Breen state IX,
with a strong cud break connecting TE in STATES to the rim
with a slightly raised retained cud break affecting the adjacent
TA. Very shallow low spots cover the field around the leaves
under MERICA. A nice example of a neat die state.

(PCGS label #1431.30/

1798 S-165 R4 Large 8, Style II Hair F15
. Five points
sharper but there is a patch of microscopic roughness hidden in
the hair near the ear. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and
this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a cou-
ple light contact marks under LI and into the hair, a rim nick
under the 79, and a light rim bruise under the right side of the
denominator. Rather glossy steel and olive brown blended with
reddish chocolate toning in the hair were the microscopic
roughness resides. Nicely struck MDS Breen state II, with die
clashmarks at the throat but an uncracked reverse. The second
T in STATES was first punched inverted, then corrected, and the
top of the inverted T is clear. A nice example of a variety that's
difficult to find in grades better than VG.

1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF35
. Glossy light
olive and steel brown with overtones of sea green and light blu-
ish steel. There is very little wear on this cent but the strike is
uneven, as often seen on this variety, thanks to dies that were
out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not parallel).
This improper die alignment probably caused the strong die
crack on the reverse which is located at the place where the
dies came the closest when striking a cent. The crack must have
occurred very early in the marriage and an uncracked example
is unknown. No roughness or verdigris and only a few trivial
contact marks. The notable ones are a short diagonal scratch in
the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon and a couple very
small nicks on the neck. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die
crack arcing from the dentils through the E in UNITED, the
wreath, and the fraction ending at the rim under the right side
of the denominator. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW. The
bust, lower half of the 798, and the opposing OF-A on the
reverse are all weakly struck.

1798 S-167 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair F15
. Sharpness EF40
but covered with uniform extremely fine roughness under a par-
tially glossy dark olive brown and steel patina. There is a speck
of verdigris at the tip of the nose but no notable contact marks.
Sharply struck EDS.

1798 S-169 R3 G6 but Counterstamped
. Glossy medium
chocolate and olive with smooth, attractive surfaces. No
defects, but there is a large counterstamp covering nearly the
entire head of Ms. Liberty. The stamp is a large raised "T" inside
an incuse heart, and the style appears to be quite old. Unlisted
in Brunk and the first example of the counterstamp seen by this
cataloger. The date is strong but the central part of the reverse
was flattened by the stamp.

1798 S-172 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VG8+
. Clipped Plan-
chet. Close to VG10 but there are too many tiny nicks scattered
over the obverse for the higher grade. None of the nicks is dis-
tracting and the eye appeal of this cent is nice for the grade. No
roughness or verdigris. Glossy medium chocolate brown. Rare
TDS, Breen state VI, with a cud break connecting ICA to the rim
above. A curved planchet clip affects the dentils over ER in LIB-
ERTY and the opposing ones under the fraction.
