1796 S-114 R5- Draped Bust VG8
. Sharpness F15 but cov-
ered with uniform fine roughness mostly hidden under glossy
chocolate brown toning with lighter steel brown toning covering
the devices. There are faint traces of shallow reddish verdigris
on the reverse but overall the eye appeal of this piece is decent.
The notable marks are faint hairline scratches covering the por-
trait plus a few stray hairline scratches on the reverse. None of
the scratches is visible to the unaided eye. EDS, Breen state I,
before any cracks. The date is bold and the legends are com-
plete, although a few letters on the reverse are relatively weak
thanks to an uneven strike.
Estimated Value .................................................... $1,000-UP

1796 S-114 R5- Draped Bust Fair-2
. Glossy steel and light
chocolate brown. Possibly recolored but the surfaces are per-
fectly smooth and choice for the grade, just heavily worn. The
only mark is a tiny rim nick over the E in STATES. The 6 is clear
while the 179 is only partially visible but still easily readable. No
more than half the legend on the reverse remains visible. EDS,
Breen state I. The die crack from the right top of the second T
in STATES to the dentils is clear.

1796 S-118 R5+ Draped Bust AG3
. Sharpness VG7 but the
obverse is covered with fine to moderate granularity and the
reverse is lightly corroded with slightly uneven surfaces. No ver-
digris or contact marks other than a dull rim nick over the C in
AMERICA. Slightly glossy light chocolate and olive brown with
some lighter brown toning on the reverse. The date and leg-
ends are complete and easily readable in spite of the rough-
ness. There is a minor planchet clip that does not reach the
dentils behind the middle curls and at the opposing rim over D-
S.
Estimated Value .......................................................$400-UP

1797 S-120b R2 Reverse of 1796 with Gripped Edge
VG10
. Sharpness VF25 but there are a couple dull dents inside
the wreath and the planchet is slightly warped. In addition the
field before the portrait has been lightly smoothed for some rea-
son that is not apparent. Cleaned and retoned frosty dark steel
and olive brown. Sharp but far from choice. LDS, Breen state
VI, with all the die cracks and crumbling associated with the
late die state. The date and legends are all bold and the "Grip"
marks (a series of small depressions and bumps) on the edge
are strong.
Estimated Value .........................................................$80-UP

1797 S-121b R3- Reverse of 1796 with Gripped Edge
VG7
. Very slightly sharper but there are three very light
scratches in the field before the neck and a couple more at
TATE on the reverse. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly
smooth, particularly on the reverse where microscopic rough-
ness is mostly hidden under the attractive glossy chocolate
brown toning. No verdigris. The date is strong and the legends
are complete although STAT is faint. EDS, Breen state I, before
any die cracks on the obverse. The "Grip" marks on the edge
are clear.
Estimated Value .......................................................$150-UP

1797 S-127 R4 F12
. Sharpness VF25 or a bit better but
covered with uniform very fine roughness under a slightly
glossy dark greenish olive brown and steel patina. No verdi-
gris. The only significant marks are a dull scratch in the hair
under ER in LIBERTY and another from the N in ONE to the
E in CENT. Both scratches are old and blend perfectly into
the natural patina. MDS, Breen state IV, with a clear die
crack from the dentils through the left top of the second T
in STATES to the left foot of the adjacent A, and a vertical
die crack up into the field from the bust tip. Double struck.
The first strike was centered on the planchet but it was
struck a second time slightly off center to K-11 and rotated
about 10-15 degrees. The result is a dramatic, easily visible
mint error showing the lower half of the first date and the
complete second date, plus other doubling on both sides.
Removed from an NGC slab graded VF Details, Reverse
Scratched (NGC label #2038608-047 included, and it shows
the attribution, Double Struck Mint Error status, and the
Mervis provenance).
Estimated Value .............................................. $1,500-UP

1797 S-127 R4 G6
. Attractive glossy medium chocolate
brown, the devices a slightly lighter shade than the protected
areas. Smooth and void of any significant marks, just evenly
worn. A dull, light rim nick at the D in UNITED is the only
defect, and it is trivial. EDS but not quite the earliest, Breen
state II, showing a subtle bulge near the dentils before the chin.
The date is bold and the legends are complete.
Estimated Value .......................................................$100-UP
